Xavier at DePaul

ROSEMONT, Ill. (Interstat) — Two Big East teams looking to rebound from conference-opening losses will meet Saturday when the Xavier Musketeers visit the DePaul Blue Demons at Allstate Arena.

Xavier (9-5, 0-1 Big East) enters off a 90-67 home defeat to Connecticut on Wednesday. DePaul (8-6, 0-1) fell 71-66 at Villanova the same night. Both teams will be seeking their first league win and to build momentum early in the conference slate.

The Musketeers will lean on forward Filip Borovicanin, who is coming off a standout performance against the Huskies. The junior recorded a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds, adding six assists in 34 minutes. Over his last five games, Borovicanin is averaging 11.0 points and 7.0 assists, serving as a key facilitator. Guard Malik Messina-Moore, who scored a team-high 16 points against UConn, provides additional backcourt scoring.

DePaul counters with guard CJ Gunn, who has been a consistent offensive threat. Gunn scored 15 points in the loss at Villanova, marking his third straight game with at least 15 points. The senior is averaging 14.2 points over his last five contests. Backcourt mate Layden Blocker, who had 13 points and three assists against the Wildcats, offers secondary playmaking.

The matchup pits Xavier’s offense, which averages 76.6 points per game, against a DePaul defense that has allowed 71.1 points per contest. The Musketeers have shown vulnerability on the road, including an 81-62 loss at Iowa in November. DePaul is 6-2 at home this season, with those losses coming against then-Connecticut and Northwestern in overtime.

Historically, Xavier has dominated the series, winning 33 of the 41 all-time meetings. The teams will meet again in Cincinnati on Jan. 31.

Following this game, Xavier travels to face Marquette on Jan. 7. DePaul hosts Georgetown on Jan. 6.

Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. EST Saturday.
