Utah Valley Routs Samford in Non-Conference Men’s Basketball
OREM, Utah (Interstat) — In a commanding display of both offensive efficiency and defensive dominance, the Utah Valley Wolverines routed the Samford Bulldogs 89-45 in a non-conference men’s basketball game Wednesday at the Aventura Palace Resort.
The Wolverines, who improved to 5-2, never trailed, establishing control from the opening tip and methodically pulling away in a game defined by stark statistical contrasts. Samford’s offense was stifled throughout, with the Bulldogs falling to 4-5 on the season.
Utah Valley’s Jackson Holcombe led all scorers with 21 points, showcasing an efficient inside game. He was complemented by Trevan Leonhardt, who added 15 points and four assists, and Tyler Hendricks, who chipped in 11 points and two blocks.
The game’s outcome was heavily influenced by the teams’ shooting performances. Utah Valley connected on 35 of 62 attempts from the field, a scorching 56.5 percent. Samford, by contrast, endured a frigid night, making only 17 of 67 shots for a 25.4 percent clip. The Bulldogs’ struggles extended to the free-throw line, where they converted just 5 of 12 attempts.
Defensively, the Wolverines were a formidable presence, swatting away 10 Samford shots and recording nine steals. Their interior defense was particularly effective, limiting the Bulldogs to just 22 points in the paint while scoring 54 of their own. Utah Valley also capitalized on Samford’s mistakes, scoring 21 points off 16 Bulldog turnovers.
The first half set the tone for the evening. Utah Valley opened the game on a 7-0 run and never looked back, building a 42-14 lead by halftime. Samford’s offensive woes were encapsulated in a stretch of over seven minutes in the first period where they failed to score a single point.
While the Bulldogs showed slightly more life after the break, scoring 31 second-half points, the Wolverines continued their efficient scoring, adding 47 points to their total to remove any doubt about the result. Isaiah Campbell-Finch was the lone bright spot for Samford, finishing with 12 points.
The victory extends Utah Valley’s winning streak to two games following a 75-52 road win at South Dakota State. Samford, which had defeated Georgia State 78-63 a day earlier, saw its brief winning streak snapped in decisive fashion.
Looking ahead, Utah Valley travels to face San Diego State on Wednesday, Dec. 3. Samford’s next contest is at VCU on Friday, Dec. 5.
