Utah State Holds Off VCU Rally for Tight Neutral-Court Victory
RICHMOND, Va. (Interstat) — In a neutral-site showdown that came down to the final possession, the Utah State Aggies held off a furious second-half rally from the VCU Rams to secure an 80-77 victory Friday night at Dr Pepper Arena.
The game, played before a crowd of 2,049 in Frisco, Texas, saw the Aggies build a commanding lead in the first half only to watch it nearly evaporate after halftime as the Rams mounted a relentless comeback attempt that ultimately fell just short.
Utah State, now 2-0 to start the young season, looked dominant early, using efficient offense and a stifling interior presence to take a 45-36 lead into the locker room. The Aggies’ first-half performance was a model of control, establishing a tone that VCU struggled to match for the first 20 minutes.
The second half, however, was a different story. VCU, now 1-1, emerged from the break with renewed defensive intensity, chipping away at the deficit throughout the period. The Rams outscored the Aggies 41-35 after halftime, turning what looked like a potential blowout into a nail-biting contest that was not decided until the final buzzer.
The outcome was a mild upset according to advanced metrics, as Interstat’s ELO system had projected VCU with a 53.2 percent probability to win.
The Aggies’ victory was anchored by a balanced and potent offensive attack, led by a stellar performance from guard MJ Collins. The Clover, South Carolina, native poured in a game-high 22 points in 33 minutes of action, providing a consistent scoring threat that VCU struggled to contain.
He was complemented superbly by fellow guard Mason Falslev, who added 18 points. The backcourt duo of Collins and Falslev proved to be a formidable challenge for the Rams’ defense, consistently finding seams and converting opportunities.
While Collins and Falslev handled the bulk of the scoring, the Aggies’ offense was expertly orchestrated by Drake Allen. The 6-foot-5 guard from Eagle Mountain, Utah, was the primary facilitator, dishing out nine assists against just a single turnover in 27 minutes. His command of the game and ability to create for others was a critical component of Utah State’s offensive success, even as he contributed seven points of his own.
Inside, Utah State established a decisive advantage. The Aggies dominated the painted area, outscoring VCU 44 to 26 in points in the paint. Forward Garry Clark, a 6-foot-9 sophomore from St. Louis, was a key part of that effort, finishing with 11 points. Defensively, Karson Templin, a hometown product from nearby Fairview, Texas, made his presence felt with three blocked shots in just 19 minutes off the bench.
For VCU, the comeback effort was fueled by the backcourt tandem of Nyk Lewis and Jadrian Tracey. Lewis, a guard from Washington, D.C., led the Rams with 19 points, while Tracey, from Fort Myers, Florida, chipped in 16 points and three assists. Their scoring kept VCU within striking distance as they battled back from the first-half hole.
The Rams also received a significant spark off the bench from Tyrell Ward, who scored 11 points in just 12 minutes, and Ahmad Nowell, who added 12 points in 10 minutes of action. Their energy and efficiency provided a necessary lift for a VCU team searching for answers against a disciplined Utah State squad.
Despite the second-half surge, VCU could never quite draw even. Utah State’s ability to score inside, coupled with their efficiency in converting turnovers into points (Interstat) — they held a 22-19 edge in points off turnovers (Interstat) — provided just enough cushion to withstand the Rams’ final push.
The game was a test of resilience for both teams early in the season. Utah State followed up a dominant 110-54 season-opening victory over Westminster with this hard-fought win against a higher-caliber opponent. VCU, coming off a 103-74 win against Wagner, showed fight in the second half but will look to address their first-half struggles as they move forward.
Looking ahead, the Utah State Aggies will return home to Logan to face in-state foe Weber State on Wednesday, Nov. 12. The VCU Rams will also return to their home court in Richmond the same day, hosting Saint Peter’s as both teams continue their non-conference schedules. For the Aggies, the victory provides early-season momentum, while the Rams are left to ponder a narrow defeat that highlighted both their vulnerabilities and their fighting spirit.
