Villanova Pulls Away From Xavier in Big East Matchup

BRYN MAWR, Pa. (Interstat) — In a display of offensive efficiency and defensive pressure that underscored their Big East stature, the Villanova Wildcats pulled away from the Xavier Musketeers for a 91-78 victory on Saturday afternoon at The Pavilion.

The game was ultimately defined by Villanova’s blistering start to the second half, a decisive run that transformed a competitive contest into a comfortable lead. Leading by 12 points at halftime, the Wildcats opened the final period with a clinical 12-2 surge over the first four minutes, extending their advantage to 56-38 and effectively silencing any Xavier comeback hopes. The Musketeers, who played with effort and scrap, never recovered from that knockout sequence.

Villanova’s offensive execution was nearly flawless, shooting 56.5% from the field and 41.9% from three-point range. They scored 91 points on just 69 possessions, an elite offensive rating of 131.4, while committing only two turnovers in the second half. Xavier, by contrast, managed a 105.9 offensive rating, shooting 40.9% overall. The Musketeers were perfect from the free-throw line, making all 14 attempts, but were overwhelmed by Villanova’s shot-making and ball security.

The Wildcats were led by a dominant performance from forward Duke Brennan. The 6-foot-10 junior from Chandler, Arizona, controlled the paint, finishing with 20 points and 13 rebounds for a double-double, adding two assists and a block. His interior presence on both ends was a constant challenge for Xavier.

Villanova’s backcourt orchestrated the offense with precision. Guard Acaden Lewis, from Washington, D.C., dished out 12 assists against just two turnovers, directing traffic and setting up his teammates for high-percentage looks. Fellow guard Devin Askew of Sacramento, California, contributed a well-rounded line of 18 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Tyler Perkins, a guard from Lorton, Virginia, provided crucial perimeter scoring, knocking down six three-pointers for his 18 points.

Xavier was led by forward Jovan Milicevic of Toronto, who fought hard for 21 points, six rebounds and four assists. Guards Malik Messina-Moore of Ventura, California, and Filip Borovicanin of Belgrade, Serbia, each added 14 points. The Musketeers won the turnover battle, forcing 10 Villanova miscues while committing only seven, and matched the Wildcats on the offensive glass, but could not offset the home team’s superior shooting.

The first half set the stage for Villanova’s breakout. After Xavier scored the game’s first four points, the Wildcats responded with a 21-9 run, fueled by efficient ball movement and transition opportunities. Brennan and Askew were central figures, establishing an inside-out attack that Xavier struggled to contain. The Musketeers stayed within striking distance thanks to Milicevic and a perfect 8-for-8 first-half performance from the free-throw line, but Villanova’s 44-32 halftime lead felt commanding.

That command became absolute with the second-half opening blitz. Lewis found Perkins and Brennan for easy scores, and Askew capped the run with a three-pointer, forcing an early Xavier timeout. The Musketeers showed resilience, cutting the lead to 13 points on several occasions, but each time Villanova answered with a timely three, often from Perkins or Askew, or a key basket from Brennan to maintain a double-digit cushion.

With the win, Villanova improved to 24-7 overall and solidified its position near the top of the conference standings. Xavier fell to 14-17, concluding a difficult regular season. The game’s total points of 169 surpassed the pregame over/under line of 153.5. Villanova also covered the pregame spread, having been installed as an 11.5-point favorite.

The victory completed a regular-season sweep for Villanova over Xavier, having also defeated the Musketeers in overtime, 92-89, on Feb. 17 in Cincinnati. The Wildcats will now look ahead to the Big East Tournament with momentum, while Xavier’s season hangs in the balance pending potential postseason invitations.
