CEDAR CITY, Utah (Interstat) — A surging Utah Valley team looks to continue its push toward the postseason when it visits rival Southern Utah in a Western Athletic Conference men’s basketball matchup Thursday night at Centrum Arena.
The Wolverines (22-7) enter on a three-game winning streak and have won seven of their last eight, most recently a 74-67 victory over Abilene Christian on Saturday. Southern Utah (10-19) snapped a four-game skid with an 81-67 home win over Utah Tech the same day.
Utah Valley guard Trevan Leonhardt is playing his best basketball of the season, averaging 12.0 points and 6.3 assists over the last seven games. He posted 16 points and seven assists in the latest win. The Wolverines have balanced scoring, with Jackson Holcombe and Isaac Davis also coming off strong performances.
The Thunderbirds will lean on guard Tanner Hayhurst, who erupted for a season-high 25 points in their last outing. He has scored in double figures in five of his last six games.
The in-state rivals split their two meetings this season, each winning on their home floor. Southern Utah claimed the most recent encounter, 84-70, on Jan. 21 in Cedar City. Utah Valley won the prior matchup 89-72 on Jan. 8 in Orem.
With the regular season winding down, Utah Valley aims to solidify its conference standing, while Southern Utah looks to build momentum and play spoiler in front of its home crowd. The Thunderbirds have shown they can be dangerous at home, having beaten the Wolverines there earlier this year.
