Utah Valley Holds Off Southern Utah Rally in WAC Showdown
CEDAR CITY, Utah (Interstat) — In a game defined by a blistering start and a furious, desperate finish, Utah Valley survived a second-half onslaught from Southern Utah to escape Centrum Arena with a 92-88 victory in a Western Athletic Conference men’s basketball thriller on Thursday night.
The Wolverines, who entered as heavy favorites, appeared poised for a comfortable win after a dominant first half. They raced out to a 53-39 halftime lead behind the efficient scoring of forward Isaac Davis. The 6-foot-8 junior from Idaho Falls was nearly unstoppable early, scoring 16 of his game-high 28 points before the break. His interior presence, coupled with a key early block on Southern Utah’s Isaiah Cottrell, set a physical tone that the Thunderbirds initially struggled to match.
Utah Valley’s backcourt, led by Trevan Leonhardt, expertly managed the offense. Leonhardt, a guard from Kaysville, Utah, finished with 18 points and a game-high seven assists, repeatedly finding Davis and others for easy baskets as the Wolverines built their substantial advantage.
The narrative shifted dramatically after halftime. Southern Utah, playing in front of a home crowd of 1,540, emerged with renewed defensive intensity and began chipping away at the deficit. The Thunderbirds’ comeback was fueled by guard Elijah Duval, who scored 20 points, and a significant contribution from their bench. Reserve forward Cale Barclay provided a critical spark, scoring 12 points, while 7-foot center Kai Burdick added 16 points, many during the second-half surge.
Southern Utah outscored Utah Valley 49-39 in the second half, methodically closing the gap. The Thunderbirds’ defense, which forced 10 Utah Valley turnovers after halftime, ignited their transition game and silenced the Wolverines’ previously fluid offense for long stretches. With under four minutes to play, Southern Utah had trimmed the lead to single digits, applying immense pressure on the visitors.
The most crucial sequence of the game occurred in the final 33 seconds. Clinging to a four-point lead, Utah Valley’s Isaac Davis was fouled and sent to the line. He missed the first free throw but calmly sank the second, pushing the lead to 84-80. On the ensuing possession, Southern Utah’s Duval drove for a layup to make it 84-82 with 24 seconds left.
Southern Utah immediately fouled Leonhardt, who made both free throws. Duval answered again with a layup, cutting the lead back to two with just nine seconds remaining. Forced to foul again, the Thunderbirds sent Sherman Weatherspoon to the line. He missed the first attempt but made the second, giving Utah Valley a three-point cushion at 87-84.
Needing a three to tie, Southern Utah’s final play broke down. Duval was forced into a contested driving dunk with one second left, bringing the Thunderbirds to 88. Leonhardt was fouled on the inbound and sealed the victory with two final free throws, providing the final margin and ending Southern Utah’s valiant comeback attempt.
Beyond Davis and Leonhardt, Utah Valley received 10 points from guard Sherman Weatherspoon. For Southern Utah, Cottrell finished with 15 points and two blocks, while Jaiden Feroah contributed nine points, nine rebounds and two blocks in 38 minutes of action.
The victory improved Utah Valley’s record to 23-7 overall and continued its strong late-season form. The Wolverines have now won three straight and eight of their last nine. Southern Utah, despite the loss that dropped them to 10-20, showed significant fight after being routed by 17 points in the teams’ previous meeting in Orem on Jan. 8.
Utah Valley concludes its regular season on the road at Utah Tech on Saturday. Southern Utah will finish its campaign at home against California Baptist, also on Saturday.
