Oral Roberts Routs UMKC in Summit League Matchup

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Interstat) — In a Summit League matchup between two teams seeking to end difficult seasons on a positive note, the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles delivered a decisive and efficient performance, overwhelming the Missouri-Kansas City Kangaroos 94-70 on Saturday night at Municipal Auditorium.

Fueled by a dominant first half and a stellar offensive showing from guard Ty Harper, Oral Roberts snapped a two-game skid and improved to 8-22 overall. UMKC, struggling through a season of narrow defeats and blowout losses, fell to 4-26.

The most important part of the game was its inception. Oral Roberts established immediate and total control, rendering any hope of a Kangaroo upset moot within the opening minutes. The Golden Eagles scored the game’s first 11 points, a blistering run that set the tone for the entire evening. Luke Gray of Edmond, Oklahoma, opened the scoring with a 3-pointer just 54 seconds in, and Harper followed with back-to-back pull-up jumpers. By the first media timeout with 16:25 remaining in the half, Oral Roberts led 11-0, having forced UMKC into five consecutive missed shots and two turnovers.

That explosive start allowed Oral Roberts to play with confidence and pace, while UMKC spent the remaining 36 minutes in a futile chase. The Kangaroos did not score until a CJ Evans layup at the 14:46 mark, and by then the Golden Eagles’ offensive rhythm was firmly established. Oral Roberts led by as many as 19 in the first half and took a commanding 43-30 lead into the break, having shot over 59% from the field while holding UMKC to 30% shooting.

Harper, a 6-foot-3 guard from Norcross, Georgia, was the catalyst and the game’s standout performer. He finished with 27 points and six assists in 32 minutes, consistently breaking down the UMKC defense to create shots for himself and others. His backcourt partner, Connor Dow of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, added 20 points, and Gray chipped in another 20, providing a potent inside-outside combination that the Kangaroos could not counter.

The Golden Eagles’ offensive execution was clinical. They scored 94 points on just 75 possessions, an elite offensive rating of 125.5. They shot 59% from the field overall and a solid 42.9% from 3-point range. While their free-throw shooting was a subpar 13 of 23, it was the only blemish on an otherwise spectacular scoring display. Their ball movement produced 10 assists against only eight turnovers, and their defensive activity generated 10 steals.

Missouri-Kansas City, projected as a slight favorite by advanced metrics pregame, never found its footing. The Kangaroos were led by Karmello Branch of Tampa, Florida, who scored 22 points, and Jayson Petty of Phoenix, Arizona, who added 18. But as a team, they managed only 70 points on 76 possessions, shooting 41.1% from the field and committing 11 turnovers against just five assists. They were outrebounded and outhustled, particularly in the decisive opening stanza.

Oral Roberts continued to apply pressure in the second half, maintaining a lead that never dipped below 13 points. A key sequence early in the period effectively sealed the outcome. After UMKC’s Petty hit a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 36-33 with 17:51 to play, the Golden Eagles responded with a 9-0 run over the next 90 seconds. The run was fueled by their defense, as steals by Connor Dow and Ofri Naveh led to fast-break dunks for Naveh and Harper, pushing the lead back to 45-33 and forcing a UMKC timeout.

From there, Oral Roberts methodically extended its advantage, cruising to the 24-point victory. The Golden Eagles scored 51 points in the second half, shooting 60% from the field to squash any lingering doubt.

The win gave Oral Roberts a season sweep of the Kangaroos, having also won 69-60 in Tulsa on Feb. 12. For UMKC, the loss was its seventh in a row and 16th in its last 17 games, a stark contrast to the pregame statistical expectation of a home victory.

The game was played before an announced crowd of 1,114. Both teams will conclude their regular seasons next week before heading to the Summit League tournament.
