UCLA Dominates Southern California in Crosstown Showdown

LOS ANGELES (Interstat) — In a commanding display at a raucous Pauley Pavilion, the UCLA Bruins used a dominant second-half performance to pull away from crosstown rival Southern California, securing an 81-62 victory in a Big Ten Conference men’s basketball game on Tuesday night.

A sellout crowd of 13,659 watched as the Bruins, led by a scintillating 30-point effort from guard Donovan Dent, improved to 19-9 overall. The Trojans, despite a valiant 25-point night from Chad Baker-Mazara, fell to 18-10 and have now lost three consecutive games.

The most important part of the game unfolded in the opening minutes of the second half, when UCLA transformed a narrow halftime lead into a decisive advantage. Leading 38-29 at the break, the Bruins came out of the locker room with intensified defensive pressure, stifling the Trojans’ offensive flow. Southern California managed just one field goal in the first four and a half minutes of the second period, a layup by Ezra Ausar. During that critical stretch, UCLA extended its lead to 44-31, fueled by transition opportunities and sharp execution in the half-court.

The Bruins’ separation was cemented by a 13-4 run midway through the half. With the score 51-42, UCLA unleashed a decisive spurt. Xavier Booker sank a 3-pointer off a Trent Perry assist, Perry followed with a floating jumper, and then found Booker for a layup. After a Southern California timeout, Dent capped the run with a 3-pointer, pushing the UCLA lead to 62-44 with 10:34 remaining. The Trojans never threatened again, as the Bruins’ lead ballooned to as many as 23 points.

Dent, a junior from Riverside, California, was the catalyst throughout, playing 37 minutes and adding seven assists to his game-high point total. His performance was a bounce-back after scoring just 10 and six points in UCLA’s previous two road losses. He efficiently orchestrated the offense and attacked the rim, providing the consistent scoring punch the Bruins needed.

Baker-Mazara, the Trojans’ standout from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, kept his team within reach for a half, scoring 15 of his points before the break. His early 3-point shooting helped Southern California trade baskets early, but UCLA’s defensive adjustments limited his clean looks as the game progressed. Support was scarce, with only Alijah Arenas (10 points) and Kam Woods (9 points) reaching notable scoring figures for the Trojans.

UCLA showcased a balanced attack behind Dent. Perry, a guard from West Covina, contributed 13 points, four assists and relentless defensive energy. The frontcourt duo of Tyler Bilodeau and Xavier Booker provided crucial interior presence. Bilodeau scored 13 points and grabbed key rebounds, while Booker added 11 points and three blocks, altering numerous shots at the rim.

The first half was a back-and-forth affair defined by runs. Southern California jumped to an early 9-3 lead behind Baker-Mazara’s hot hand. UCLA responded with a 12-0 surge, highlighted by two Dent 3-pointers, to take a 15-9 advantage. The Trojans clawed back, but the Bruins closed the half on a 7-2 spurt, capped by a Dent pull-up jumper just before the buzzer, to take the nine-point lead into halftime that they would only expand after the break.

Defensively, UCLA was the story. The Bruins held Southern California to just 33 second-half points and consistently disrupted passing lanes, generating 11 steals. The Trojans, who entered the game having lost two straight by a combined 37 points, struggled with offensive continuity against UCLA’s active defense, committing 18 turnovers that led to 24 points for the Bruins.

According to pregame analytics from Interstat, UCLA was projected with a 77.8% probability to win. The Bruins covered the pregame spread of -5.5, and the total score of 143 fell well under the over/under line of 149.5.

UCLA looks to build on this momentum when it travels to face Minnesota on Saturday. Southern California aims to halt its skid when it returns home to host Nebraska, also on Saturday. The two rivals are scheduled to meet again in the regular-season finale at Southern California on March 7.
