Howard Dominates Delaware State in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Matchup

LEIPSIC, Del. (Interstat) — The Howard Bison delivered a commanding wire-to-wire victory, overwhelming the Delaware State Hornets 91-59 in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference men’s basketball game Monday night at a sparsely attended Memorial Hall.

From the opening tip, Howard established a dominance that never wavered. The Bison opened the game on a blistering 11-0 run, fueled by early layups from Cam Gillus and Cedric Taylor and a three-pointer from Gillus, forcing a Delaware State timeout less than three minutes into the contest. The Hornets struggled profoundly with ball security and shot creation against Howard’s active defense, committing a series of turnovers and missed shots that the Bison relentlessly converted into easy transition opportunities.

The first half was a clinic in efficient offense and disruptive defense by the visitors. Howard shot over 60% from the field in the opening period, consistently attacking the rim and sharing the ball. Meanwhile, Delaware State managed just 26 points before halftime, hampered by 11 turnovers. The Bison lead ballooned to 25 points late in the half and settled at 51-26 at the break, effectively deciding the contest before the teams retreated to the locker rooms.

The second half offered no respite for the home team. Howard maintained its intensity, extending the lead to as many as 35 points. The Bison’s depth and balance were on full display, with the starters setting the tone and the reserves seamlessly continuing the onslaught. Delaware State showed slightly more offensive rhythm after halftime, scoring 33 points, but could never mount anything resembling a threat, as Howard cruised to the 32-point conference win.

Bryce Harris and Cedric Taylor led a potent Howard attack with 17 points each. Taylor, a 6-foot-7 forward from Atlanta, added three assists and a block in 35 minutes, while Harris contributed an assist in 32 minutes. Point guard Cam Gillus of Falls Church, Virginia, orchestrated the offense masterfully, scoring 13 points and dishing out a game-high seven assists. Travelle Bryson provided a significant spark off the bench with 11 points, and Ose Okojie also added 11 points, three assists, and two blocks.

Delaware State, which fell to 6-18 overall, was led by Dean Shepherd’s 10 points. Jalen StClair added nine points. No Hornet reached double figures in scoring until the game’s final minutes. The team shot just 32% from the field for the game.

The most important part of the game was unequivocally the opening segment. Howard’s immediate 11-0 run, executed with defensive pressure and crisp offensive execution, set a definitive tone. It exposed Delaware State’s vulnerabilities and instilled a confidence in the Bison that allowed them to play freely and expansively for the remaining 37 minutes. That initial burst drained any potential energy from the home crowd and placed the Hornets in a deep, insurmountable hole from which they never recovered.

Howard improved its record to 17-10 overall and continued its strong form in MEAC play. The Bison have now won four of their last five conference games by an average margin of 24 points. Delaware State has lost three straight and eight of its last nine.

The Bison will look to carry this momentum into their next game, a key MEAC matchup against North Carolina Central at home on Saturday. Delaware State travels to face Morgan State, also on Saturday.
