McNeese State Dominates in Road Rout of Texas A&M-Commerce
COMMERCE, Texas (Interstat) — In a display of overwhelming efficiency and defensive dominance, the McNeese State Cowboys dismantled the Texas A&M-Commerce Lions 97-54 in a Southland Conference men’s basketball game Saturday night at Texas A&M-Commerce Field House.
The contest was effectively decided in the opening minutes, as McNeese State (21-5, 11-2) unleashed a blistering offensive performance paired with a suffocating defense that Texas A&M-Commerce (10-17, 5-8) could not counter. The Cowboys built a 45-29 halftime lead and then expanded it relentlessly after the break, outscoring the Lions 52-25 in the second half.
The most important sequence of the game came early, setting a tone of defensive pressure and offensive execution from which the Lions never recovered. After trading baskets in the opening minute, McNeese State guard Tyshawn Archie stole the ball from Commerce’s Damian Garcia and converted a fastbreak layup. On the ensuing Lions possession, Archie stole the ball again from Garcia, leading to free throws. This early flurry of turnovers, a theme that would plague Commerce all night, ignited the Cowboys’ transition game and established a defensive intensity that smothered the home team’s offense.
McNeese State’s victory was a masterclass in modern offensive metrics. The Cowboys scored 97 points on just 69 possessions, registering an elite offensive rating of 141.4. They shot 54.5% from the field (36 of 66) and a sharp 45.2% from 3-point range (14 of 31). Their ball security was nearly flawless, committing only three turnovers while forcing 15 from the Lions, which they converted into 30 points.
Conversely, Texas A&M-Commerce managed only 54 points on 70 possessions, an offensive rating of 77.5. The Lions shot 34.6% overall and a frigid 20.7% from beyond the arc (6 of 29). McNeese State also dominated the interior, outscoring Commerce 36-24 in the paint and holding a 26-11 advantage in fastbreak points.
Javohn Garcia led all scorers with 21 points for McNeese State, connecting on 5 of 10 3-point attempts in just 22 minutes of action. DJ Richards added 15 points, while Garwey Dual contributed 14 points and five assists. Peitok Machar anchored the defense with nine rebounds and two blocks in 22 minutes.
For Texas A&M-Commerce, Ronnie Harrison scored 19 points, and Noah Pagotto, also from Australia like McNeese State’s Machar, finished with 12 points and seven rebounds. Gianni Hunt distributed six assists but the Lions’ offense never found a consistent rhythm against the Cowboys’ defensive pressure.
The win extends McNeese State’s strong conference campaign and avenges their only other meeting this season only in the sense of maintaining dominance, having previously defeated Commerce 102-66 on Dec. 12. The loss continues a difficult season for the Lions, who have struggled to find consistency in Southland play.
The announced attendance at the Texas A&M-Commerce Field House was 502.
McNeese State will look to continue its momentum on the road at Northwestern State on Monday. Texas A&M-Commerce will try to regroup at home against Southeastern Louisiana, also on Monday.
