Memphis Dominates Charlotte in Defensive Showcase
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (Interstat) — In a game defined by defensive intensity and offensive struggles, the Memphis Tigers methodically dispatched the Charlotte 49ers 77-54 in an American Athletic Conference men’s basketball game Sunday at FedExForum.
A crowd of 9,147 watched as Memphis, improving to 12-11 overall, used a dominant first-half performance to build an insurmountable lead, holding Charlotte to a season-low in points. The 49ers fell to 13-11.
The most critical segment of the game unfolded in the opening minutes of the second half, effectively extinguishing any lingering hope for Charlotte. Memphis, which led 37-17 at halftime, opened the second period with a 9-2 run, pushing its advantage to 27 points. The sequence was emblematic of the entire contest: Charlotte missed shots, Memphis capitalized in transition and on second chances. Thierno Sylla’s dunk off a Julius Thedford assist made it 46-19 with 18:21 remaining, and the Tigers’ lead never dipped below 20 points again.
Charlotte’s offensive woes were comprehensive. The 49ers shot just 36.8% from the field and a frigid 21.9% from 3-point range. They managed only six assists against 15 turnovers, which Memphis converted into 10 steals and numerous easy scoring opportunities. The Tigers’ offensive rating of 109.1 points per 100 possessions starkly contrasted with Charlotte’s anemic 75.8, highlighting the efficiency gap.
Memphis was led by a standout performance from forward Julius Thedford. The Memphis native posted a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds, adding four assists and two steals in 25 minutes. His activity on the glass, particularly with five offensive rebounds, fueled the Tigers’ possession advantage.
He was complemented by center Aaron Bradshaw, who scored 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting, grabbed six rebounds and blocked two shots. Thierno Sylla just missed a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds, while Sincere Parker and Ashton Hardaway each added 11 points. Memphis shared the ball effectively with 10 assists and outrebounded Charlotte 44-31, including an 11-5 edge on the offensive glass.
For Charlotte, only two players reached double figures. Arden Conyers led with 14 points, and Dezayne Mingo added 12, but the 49ers’ offense never found rhythm against Memphis’s persistent defense. The Tigers recorded 10 steals and five blocks, disrupting Charlotte’s sets and leading to several transition baskets.
The victory was a bounce-back for Memphis after a narrow two-point loss to Tulane earlier in the week. Charlotte, coming off a road loss to Wichita State, has now dropped two straight conference games.
Memphis, which entered as an 8.5-point favorite according to sportsbooks, easily covered the spread. The total points scored, 131, fell well under the pregame over/under line of 144.5, a testament to the defensive tone, particularly Charlotte’s scoring difficulties.
Looking ahead, Memphis travels to face North Texas on Thursday. Charlotte returns home to host Texas-San Antonio next Sunday.
