North Alabama at Austin Peay
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (Interstat) — A surging Austin Peay squad will look to continue its climb in the ASUN Conference standings when it hosts a struggling North Alabama team on Saturday at the Winfield Dunn Center.
The Governors (16-6, 6-2 ASUN) have won seven of their last eight games, most recently an 87-76 victory over Lipscomb on Wednesday. They are led by the hot hand of guard Collin Parker, who is coming off back-to-back 30-point performances. Parker scored 30 points with six assists against Lipscomb and had 30 points and 12 rebounds in a win at West Georgia on Jan. 31.
Austin Peay’s offense has been potent, averaging 84.5 points in its last four contests. The Governors have also been strong at home, boasting a 10-2 record in Clarksville this season.
They will face a North Alabama team (7-14, 2-6) seeking to halt a slide. The Lions have lost five of their last six, including an 81-60 defeat at Central Arkansas on Wednesday. Defense has been a persistent issue; North Alabama has allowed 90 or more points in three of its last six games and ranks near the bottom of the conference in scoring defense.
The Lions’ primary threat is guard Donte Bacchus, who has scored 21 or more points in three of his last four outings. He tallied 21 points in the loss to Central Arkansas and had 23 points and seven rebounds in a narrow win at Stetson on Jan. 31.
Historically, Austin Peay has controlled this series, winning the last five meetings. The Governors won both matchups last season by an average of 22 points.
For North Alabama, a road upset would require a significant defensive turnaround to contain Parker and the Governors’ high-powered attack. For Austin Peay, the game represents an opportunity to solidify its position near the top of the league ahead of a key road stretch.
Tip-off is set for Saturday afternoon in Clarksville.
