Austin Peay Routs North Alabama Behind Efficient Offense
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (Interstat) — A blistering first-half offensive display by Austin Peay left North Alabama with an insurmountable deficit as the Governors cruised to a 91-62 victory in an ASUN Conference men’s basketball game Saturday night at the Winfield Dunn Center.
The game was effectively decided in the opening 20 minutes, where Austin Peay built a 21-point halftime lead behind scorching shooting and a dominant transition from defense to offense. The Governors shot a staggering 63.2 percent from the field in the first half, including 7 of 13 from three-point range, to take a 47-26 lead into the break. North Alabama, meanwhile, struggled to find any offensive rhythm, connecting on just 34.5 percent of its shots and turning the ball over seven times, which the Governors efficiently converted into points.
The most important part of the game was Austin Peay’s early and sustained offensive execution, which systematically dismantled the Lions’ defense. The Governors opened the game on a 21-6 run over the first eight minutes, a stretch that included three-pointers from Zyree Collins and Tate McCubbin and established a commanding tempo. North Alabama never got closer than 11 points after that initial surge. Every time the Lions showed a flicker of momentum, Austin Peay answered with a clinical basket, often from beyond the arc, to snuff out any hope of a rally. The Governors’ 146.1 offensive rating, scoring 91 points on just 62 possessions, underscored an evening of nearly flawless efficiency.
Collins, the top star for Austin Peay, led all scorers with 26 points, hitting 11 of 16 shots from the field and 4 of 7 from three-point range. He added two assists in 32 minutes. Collin Parker was equally formidable, contributing 27 points, four assists and a block. The duo combined for 53 points on 20-of-29 shooting. Anton Brookshire orchestrated the offense with a game-high seven assists.
North Alabama was led by 19 points apiece from Donte Bacchus and Braylon Patton. Bacchus added two assists and four steals, while Patton had three assists. The Lions won the offensive rebounding battle 15-6, generating 18 second-chance points, but could not overcome their overall shooting woes, finishing the game at 41.3 percent from the field and a frigid 21.4 percent from three-point range.
Austin Peay improved to 17-6 overall and strengthened its position near the top of the ASUN standings. The Governors have now won four consecutive games and nine of their last ten. North Alabama fell to 7-15, suffering its second straight lopsided defeat following a midweek loss at Central Arkansas.
The announced attendance was 4,136. According to Interstat’s ELO system, Austin Peay had an 85.70 percent probability to win pregame. The Governors covered the spread as 13-point favorites, and the total score of 153 points went under the betting over/under line of 145.5.
Austin Peay next plays at Queens (N.C.) on Wednesday. North Alabama returns home to host Central Arkansas on Monday.
