Fears Leads Spartans Past Fighting Illini in Overtime Thriller

EAST LANSING, Mich. (Interstat) — In a heavyweight Big Ten clash that lived up to its billing, Jeremy Fears delivered a masterful performance, scoring 26 points and dishing out 15 assists to will Michigan State to an 85-82 overtime victory over Illinois on Saturday night at a raucous Breslin Center.

The win, witnessed by a sellout crowd of 14,797, forged a tie atop the conference standings as both teams exited with identical 20-4 overall records. The game was a tense, back-and-forth affair that required an extra five minutes to decide after Illinois guard Jake Davis calmly sank two free throws with one second remaining in regulation to knot the score at 71-71.

The overtime period belonged to Fears, the Spartans’ dynamic guard from Joliet, Illinois. With the score tied at 81 and under 30 seconds to play, Fears drew a foul and made both free throws to put Michigan State ahead for good. After an Illinois miss, he was fouled again and hit two more from the line to extend the lead to 85-81 with 10 seconds left, sealing a monumental home victory.

The most critical sequence of the game unfolded in the final minute of regulation, setting the stage for Fears’ overtime heroics. With Michigan State leading 71-69 and under 10 seconds to play, the Spartans had a chance to ice the game but turned the ball over. Illinois’ Keaton Wagler missed a potential game-tying three-pointer, but Michigan State’s Jaxon Kohler secured the defensive rebound. He was immediately fouled with eight seconds left but missed the front end of a one-and-one.

Illinois secured the rebound and called timeout with 6.6 seconds remaining. On the ensuing inbounds play, Davis drove hard to the basket and was fouled by Michigan State’s Jeremy Fears on a shot attempt with one tick on the clock. With the building in a frenzy, Davis, a reserve, stepped to the line and coolly drained both free throws to force overtime, completing a comeback from a four-point deficit in the final minute.

Fears was the orchestrator throughout for Michigan State, playing 42 minutes and committing just two turnovers against his 15 assists. His control allowed the Spartans to overcome a poor three-point shooting night, converting only 7 of 24 from deep. Michigan State’s efficiency came from converting Illinois’ mistakes, scoring 22 fastbreak points to Illinois’ none, and committing only eight turnovers while forcing 14.

Illinois was led by David Mirkovic, who had 18 points and six assists, and Andrej Stojakovic, who added 17 points. The Fighting Illini shot just 36.6% from the field but stayed in the game by making 20 of 24 free throws and winning the battle on the offensive glass, 14-14.

The first half set the tone for a tight contest, with Illinois taking a 39-35 lead into the break behind 10 points from Stojakovic. The second half saw 10 lead changes and six ties as neither team could build a cushion larger than five points. Michigan State’s Carson Cooper provided a crucial interior presence with nine points and nine rebounds, while Jordan Scott added 10 points off the bench.

The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for Illinois, which had not lost since Jan. 29. Michigan State rebounded from a road loss at Minnesota earlier in the week, avenging a defeat from earlier in the season and gaining a pivotal tiebreaker in the conference race.

Both teams continue their pursuit of the Big Ten title next week. Illinois returns home to host Wisconsin on Tuesday, while Michigan State travels to face the Badgers in Madison on Friday.
