Dayton Edges Saint Bonaventure in Tight Atlantic 10 Finish

DAYTON, Ohio (Interstat) — In a game defined by a massive early deficit, a furious comeback, and a final minute of high-stakes execution, the Dayton Flyers escaped with a 72-70 victory over the Saint Bonaventure Bonnies in an Atlantic 10 Conference men’s basketball thriller on Tuesday night at a sold-out University of Dayton Arena.

The most critical sequence of the contest unfolded in the final 13 seconds, transforming what had been a resilient Bonnies rally into a heartbreaking road loss. Trailing by two, Saint Bonaventure’s Dasonte Bowen drove for a potential tying layup but missed. Frank Mitchell secured the offensive rebound and was fouled by Dayton’s 7-foot-1 center Amael L’Etang with 13 seconds on the clock.

Mitchell, a force inside all night, calmly sank both free throws to knot the score at 70-70. Dayton, without a timeout, pushed the ball upcourt. Guard Javon Bennett, who had a game-high 20 points, drove into the lane and converted a difficult layup with 48 seconds remaining to put the Flyers back ahead.

Saint Bonaventure called a timeout to set up a final play. Out of the huddle, the ball found its way to Darryl Simmons, who led the Bonnies with 17 points. His three-point attempt from the wing missed long, and Dayton’s Jordan Derkack secured the defensive rebound. He was immediately fouled by Cayden Charles with just two-tenths of a second remaining.

Derkack, who scored 18 points off the bench, made the first free throw and intentionally missed the second, leaving no time for a Bonnies response and sealing the two-point win before an announced crowd of 13,407.

The frantic finish was a stark contrast to the game’s opening act, which saw Dayton dominate. The Flyers raced out to a 41-30 halftime lead, fueled by Bennett’s sharp shooting and active defense that forced nine Saint Bonaventure turnovers, converting them into 12 points. The Bonnies struggled from deep, missing 10 of their first 11 three-point attempts, while Dayton built its advantage at the free-throw line.

Saint Bonaventure, however, refused to capitulate. The Bonnies opened the second half with increased defensive intensity, chipping away at the lead primarily through work in the paint, where they finished with a 38-26 advantage. Mitchell, who had 16 points and nine rebounds, and Simmons led the charge. A 13-2 run midway through the half, capped by a Simmons three-pointer off a Bowen assist, brought the Bonnies all the way back to take a brief lead and set the stage for the tense final minutes.

The game was a tale of contrasting efficiencies. Dayton, despite shooting just 41.3% from the field compared to Saint Bonaventure’s 48.1%, attempted 33 free throws, making 28. The Bonnies went 14 of 17 from the line. Dayton’s ability to generate extra possessions—winning the turnover battle 13-10 and the steals category 8-5—proved vital in offsetting Saint Bonaventure’s superior field goal percentage.

Key performances underpinned the result. For Dayton, Bennett’s 20-point outing was crucial, especially his late-game composure. Derkack provided a major spark with his 18 points in just 19 minutes, and L’Etang added 16 points and seven rebounds. For Saint Bonaventure, Simmons’ 17 points and Mitchell’s interior presence were nearly enough, supported by 14 points from Bowen and 13 from Charles.

With the win, Dayton improves to 15-7 overall and stabilizes its conference standing. Saint Bonaventure, which has now lost two straight close games, falls to 13-10. The Flyers next travel to face VCU on Friday. The Bonnies look to regroup on the road at Fordham on Saturday.
