Northern Colorado Edges Eastern Washington in Tight Big Sky Contest
GARDEN CITY, Colo. (Interstat) — In a game defined by Northern Colorado’s defensive pressure and a decisive rebounding edge, the Bears held off a persistent Eastern Washington squad for a 74-71 victory in a Big Sky Conference men’s basketball game Saturday at Butler-Hancock Athletic Center.
The contest, played before a crowd of 1,708, saw the Bears improve to 13-10 overall, while the Eagles fell to 5-17.
Northern Colorado’s victory was anchored by a stifling defensive effort that generated 11 more possessions than the Eagles. The Bears forced 11 Eastern Washington turnovers while committing only three, a staggering plus-eight margin that proved critical in a tight game. That defensive intensity translated into a significant advantage in offensive efficiency, with Northern Colorado posting a rating of 110.1 points per 100 possessions compared to Eastern Washington’s 103.3.
The most important sequence of the game unfolded in the final minute. With Northern Colorado clinging to a 70-67 lead, Bears guard Zach Bloch sank a crucial three-pointer with 40 seconds remaining to extend the advantage to six. Eastern Washington’s Johnny Radford, a reserve guard from Hailey, Idaho, answered immediately with a three of his own, cutting the deficit to 70-69 with 30 seconds left.
On the ensuing inbound play, Eastern Washington was forced to foul Northern Colorado’s Ring Nyeri. The forward from Peoria, Arizona, missed the front end of a one-and-one, giving the Eagles a chance to tie or take the lead. However, on the next possession, Eagles forward Tyler Powell was called for an offensive foul, handing the ball back to the Bears with 23 seconds left.
Northern Colorado’s Brock Wisne, the game’s top performer from Thornton, Colorado, was then fouled and calmly sank both free throws to push the lead to 72-69. After an Eastern Washington timeout, the Eagles’ Isaiah Moses was fouled on a three-point attempt and made two free throws, making it 72-71 with seven seconds left. Wisne was fouled again and again delivered, hitting both shots to seal the 74-71 final. Eastern Washington’s desperation three-pointer at the buzzer missed.
Wisne finished with 13 points, nine rebounds and four assists in 36 minutes, orchestrating the Bears’ offense and coming through at the line. Nyeri led all scorers with 23 points and added five rebounds. Quinn Denker of San Jose, California, stuffed the stat sheet with nine points, eight rebounds and eight assists.
Eastern Washington was led by Alton Hamilton’s 17 points and eight rebounds. Kiree Huie added 12 points, and Johnny Radford provided a key spark off the bench with 11 points, all in the second half.
Despite shooting just 40 percent from the field and a frigid 9 of 35 from three-point range, Northern Colorado’s extra opportunities were the difference. The Bears grabbed 11 offensive rebounds, leading to a 38-34 edge in points in the paint, and their near-perfect 9-of-11 performance at the free-throw line, especially down the stretch, offset their shooting woes.
Eastern Washington shot a more efficient 46.6 percent from the field and 44.4 percent from three but could not overcome the disparity in turnovers and second-chance points. The Eagles also struggled to contain Nyeri, who scored from all three levels for the Bears.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair, featuring eight lead changes, with Northern Colorado taking a narrow 32-31 advantage into halftime. The Bears then opened the second half on a 10-4 run to establish a lead they would never fully relinquish, though the Eagles stayed within one possession for most of the final 10 minutes.
Northern Colorado, which entered the game as a 5.5-point favorite according to sportsbooks, covered the spread. The total score of 145 fell well under the pregame over/under line of 157.5.
Eastern Washington travels to face Montana on Thursday. Northern Colorado heads on the road to play Weber State, also on Thursday.
