South Dakota State Routs Oral Roberts in Summit League Matchup

BROOKINGS, S.D. (Interstat) — In a game defined by a blistering first-half offensive display, the South Dakota State Jackrabbits cruised to a 95-72 victory over the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles in a Summit League men’s basketball contest Saturday afternoon at Frost Arena.

The outcome was rarely in doubt after the opening minutes, as the Jackrabbits (11-12, 4-4 Summit) erupted for 58 points in the first half, building a 19-point lead by intermission that the Golden Eagles (5-19, 1-8) could never seriously threaten. The most important part of the game was South Dakota State’s immediate and overwhelming establishment of offensive dominance, shooting a scorching 58.1% from the field and 57.1% from three-point range in the opening period to effectively decide the contest before halftime.

South Dakota State’s offensive efficiency was staggering. The Jackrabbits scored 95 points on just 76 possessions, translating to an offensive rating of 125.5. They shot 38 for 67 from the field overall and connected on 12 of 21 three-point attempts. Oral Roberts, by contrast, managed a 96.2 offensive rating, shooting 21 of 63 from the floor and 11 of 36 from beyond the arc.

The Jackrabbits were led by a dynamic backcourt duo. Joe Sayler, a 6-foot-3 guard from White River, South Dakota, scored 24 points, grabbed eight rebounds and dished out two assists, bouncing back from a six-point outing in his previous game. Alongside him, Jaden Jackson of Bellevue, Nebraska, also poured in 24 points while adding five rebounds and five assists. Their combined 48 points set the tone from the outset.

Oral Roberts guard Ty Harper of Norcross, Georgia, kept the Golden Eagles within distant reach for a time, finishing with a game-high 26 points. Cal Furnish came off the bench to add 12 points for the visitors. The Golden Eagles’ effort was hampered by poor shooting and an inability to string together defensive stops against the Jackrabbits’ fluid attack.

South Dakota State’s offensive execution was a team effort. Kalen Garry orchestrated the offense with seven assists to go with 14 points and five rebounds. Damon Wilkinson provided a strong interior presence with 12 points, six rebounds and two blocks, while Bubz Alvarez contributed 11 points and eight rebounds.

The game’s trajectory was established early. After Oral Roberts’ Luke Gray hit a three-pointer for the game’s first points, South Dakota State responded with a 14-3 run, fueled by precise ball movement and hot shooting. The Jackrabbits consistently found open looks, whether inside through Wilkinson or on the perimeter where Jackson and Sayler were lethal. A late first-half flurry, capped by consecutive three-pointers from Jackson, pushed the lead to 58-39 at the break.

The second half offered no dramatic shift. South Dakota State maintained its comfortable margin, with its lead never dipping below 15 points. The Jackrabbits continued to share the ball, finishing with 21 assists on 38 made field goals, while their defense limited Oral Roberts to 33 second-half points.

The victory moves South Dakota State to .500 in conference play and provides momentum heading into a key week. The Jackrabbits will host Saint Thomas (Minn.) on Wednesday before a rivalry matchup with South Dakota on Saturday. Oral Roberts, mired in a difficult season, will look to regroup before traveling to face Saint Thomas (Minn.) next Saturday.

An announced crowd of 3,017 at Frost Arena watched the Jackrabbits snap a two-game skid in decisive fashion, outperforming pregame expectations as a 13.5-point favorite. The combined score of 167 points sailed over the pregame over/under line of 147.
