Temple at Texas-San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO (Interstat) — The Temple Owls look to continue their push in the American Athletic Conference standings when they visit the struggling Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners on Saturday at the Convocation Center.

Temple (12-7, 3-3 AAC) enters on a winning note after a 69-65 road victory at Rice on Wednesday. The Owls have been inconsistent in league play but have feasted on opponents below them, a category that includes UTSA.

The Roadrunners (4-15, 0-6) are mired in a nine-game losing streak, their most recent a 62-81 defeat at North Texas. UTSA’s last win came on Dec. 20 against Incarnate Word. Their conference struggles have been pronounced, losing AAC games by an average margin of 22.8 points.

This is a rematch of a Jan. 3 meeting in Philadelphia, which Temple dominated 76-57. Owls guard Jordan Mason was instrumental in that win, posting 15 points, five rebounds and 12 assists. Mason is coming off a 15-point, six-assist performance against Rice and will be a primary focus for UTSA’s defense.

For the Roadrunners, guard Jamir Simpson has been a bright spot during the skid, scoring in double figures in five of the last seven games, including 14 points in the loss to North Texas. He had 11 points in the first matchup against Temple.

The Owls’ recent formula has relied on defense, holding opponents to 65 points or fewer in three of their last four wins. They will aim to contain a UTSA offense that has failed to reach 70 points in five straight games.

Temple seeks to improve its road record (3-4) and build momentum before a key homestand next week. For UTSA, the search for its first AAC win of the season grows more urgent as the calendar nears February.

Tip-off is set for Saturday afternoon in San Antonio.
