Saint Peter’s Holds Off Quinnipiac for Metro Atlantic Road Victory
HAMDEN, Conn. (Interstat) — In a gritty Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference clash defined by defense and crucial free throws down the stretch, Saint Peter’s weathered a second-half surge from Quinnipiac to secure a 74-70 victory on Wednesday night at TD Bank Sports Center.
The Peacocks (9-6, 4-2 MAAC) led for nearly the entire contest but saw a once-comfortable advantage whittled away in the final minutes before sealing the game at the foul line. The Bobcats (12-6, 4-3), who entered as heavy favorites according to analytics and the betting spread, dropped their second home game of the conference season.
Saint Peter’s built its winning margin on superior efficiency, shooting 46% from the field and a critical 21 of 26 from the free throw line. Quinnipiac, meanwhile, struggled to find consistent offense, shooting just 40.7% overall and a costly 15 of 24 from the charity stripe. The Peacocks also won the battle from beyond the arc, hitting 7 of 16 compared to the Bobcats’ 7 of 19.
The game’s most important sequence unfolded in the final 30 seconds with Saint Peter’s clinging to a 70-68 lead. After Quinnipiac’s Keith McKnight converted a layup and a free throw to cut the deficit to two, the Peacocks’ Brent Bland was fouled with six seconds remaining. The junior guard from Wheatley Heights, New York, calmly sank both free throws to push the lead back to four. Quinnipiac’s last-gasp attempt, a rushed three-pointer from Amarri Monroe, missed as time expired.
Saint Peter’s set the tone early, bursting to a 9-1 lead in the opening three minutes behind quick ball movement and defensive pressure. The Peacocks maintained control throughout a physical first half, taking a 38-33 lead into the break. Bryce Eaton, a sophomore from Detroit, paced the early effort with 10 first-half points.
Quinnipiac refused to fade in the second half, primarily behind the scoring of Jaden Zimmerman. The Bronx native scored 14 of his team-high 19 points after halftime, including a trio of three-pointers that kept the Bobcats within striking distance. His three-pointer with 7:46 remaining gave Quinnipiac its first and only lead of the night at 60-59, capping a 12-2 run.
The Peacocks responded immediately. Jahki Gupton answered with a driving layup 20 seconds later to retake the lead, sparking a 7-0 run that Saint Peter’s would not relinquish. The Bobcats had several opportunities in the final four minutes but were undone by missed shots and key turnovers, finishing with 17 points off turnovers but only 5 assists as a team.
Gupton and Bland led a balanced Saint Peter’s attack with 17 points apiece. Eaton finished with 18 points and 4 assists. Zaakir Williamson added 6 points and provided stout interior defense with a block in 25 minutes.
For Quinnipiac, Grant Randall joined Zimmerman in double figures with 17 points, 3 assists and a block. Monroe filled the stat sheet with 12 points, 4 assists and a block, but his backcourt mate Asim Jones was limited to 8 points on 3-of-9 shooting.
The victory marks a significant road win for Saint Peter’s, which had lost two of its last three entering the game. The Peacocks will look to build momentum when they host Rider on Saturday. Quinnipiac, which saw a two-game win streak snapped, must regroup quickly for a road trip to Merrimack, also on Saturday.
The announced attendance at the 3,570-seat TD Bank Sports Center was 814.
