North Alabama Rallies Past Bellarmine in ASUN Contest
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Interstat) — A dominant second-half performance fueled by a career afternoon from Corneilous Williams propelled North Alabama to an 82-73 victory over Bellarmine in an ASUN Conference men’s basketball game Saturday afternoon at Knights Hall.
The Lions, who entered the game on a three-game losing streak, trailed 33-32 at halftime but erupted for 50 points after the break to snap their skid and improve to 6-9 overall. The Knights fell to 6-10.
The most important part of the game was North Alabama’s decisive 18-4 run early in the second half, which transformed a one-point deficit into a commanding 13-point lead from which Bellarmine could not recover. The surge was powered by the inside-outside combination of Williams and sharpshooter Dallas Howell, and it showcased an offensive efficiency that had eluded the Lions during their recent losses.
Williams, a 6-foot-9 junior from Beaumont, Mississippi, was the game’s central figure, posting a monstrous double-double with 20 points and 15 rebounds in 38 minutes. This performance was a stark departure from his recent outings, where he had scored a combined 11 points in his previous two games. He controlled the paint on both ends, converting key putbacks and protecting the rim.
Howell, a 6-7 guard from Coffee Springs, Alabama, provided the perimeter firepower, scoring a game-high 24 points, including six three-pointers. His back-to-back threes during the critical second-half run stretched the Lions’ lead and forced Bellarmine into defensive adjustments that opened driving lanes.
Bellarmine, which led for much of the first half behind hot three-point shooting, saw its offense stagnate against North Alabama’s tightened defense after halftime. The Knights, who made 11 three-pointers in the game, were held to 40 second-half points on 40.5% shooting from the field.
Brian Waddell led Bellarmine with 20 points, while Kenyon Goodin and Jack Karasinski each added 17. Karasinski also grabbed six rebounds. The Knights capitalized on transition opportunities, outscoring North Alabama 14-4 in fastbreak points, but were ultimately undone by the Lions’ superior work on the glass and at the free-throw line.
North Alabama outrebounded Bellarmine 35-23 and held a 10-5 advantage in offensive rebounds, leading to 13 second-chance points. The Lions also made 17 of 22 free throws compared to Bellarmine’s 8-of-13 performance. North Alabama’s offensive rating of 137.9 on 59 possessions underscored its efficient scoring afternoon, as the team shot 54% from the field and 52.4% from three-point range.
Canin Jefferson facilitated the Lions’ attack with six assists to go with 17 points, and Cortez Graham-Howard added 10 points, seven assists and five rebounds in a strong all-around effort.
The game was a tale of two halves. Bellarmine started quickly, hitting five first-half threes to build a lead that grew to as many as eight points. North Alabama chipped away, closing the half on a 5-0 spurt to trail by just one at the break.
The Lions carried that momentum into the second half, seizing control with their game-defining run. Williams and Howell combined for 14 points during the stretch, which gave North Alabama a 58-45 lead with 12:23 remaining. Bellarmine managed to cut the deficit to seven points on several occasions in the final minutes, but each time the Lions answered, often at the free-throw line, to secure the road victory.
Attendance at Knights Hall was 1,373. North Alabama next hosts North Florida on Thursday, while Bellarmine travels to face Lipscomb on the same night.
