Austin Peay Uses Defense, Transition to Secure Road Win Over Stetson
DELAND, Fla. (Interstat) — In a game defined by defensive pressure and opportunistic offense, the Austin Peay Governors secured a decisive 81-69 road victory over the Stetson Hatters in an ASUN Conference men’s basketball matchup Saturday at Edmunds Center.
The Governors, now 10-5 overall, leveraged a disruptive defensive scheme to build and maintain control, forcing 14 Stetson turnovers while committing only five of their own. That 15-5 advantage in points off turnovers proved to be a foundational element of the win. Austin Peay also complemented its defense with efficient shot-making, posting an offensive rating of 115.4 points per 100 possessions compared to Stetson’s 96.9.
The most critical sequence of the contest came late in the first half, turning a competitive game into a comfortable Austin Peay lead. With the Governors holding a narrow 19-17 edge and just over eight minutes remaining before halftime, they unleashed a game-defining 14-2 run. The surge was fueled by the backcourt duo of Zyree Collins and Anton Brookshire, along with a relentless defensive effort. It began with a Collins steal and layup, followed by a Brookshire 3-pointer. After a Stetson turnover, Collins struck again from beyond the arc. The run concluded with another Collins layup, giving Austin Peay a 33-19 advantage and forcing a Stetson timeout. The Hatters, who fell to 6-11, never recovered, as the Governors carried a 38-31 lead into the break and managed the second-half clock effectively.
Collins, the top star for Austin Peay, led all scorers with 17 points, adding seven rebounds, three assists and a game-high three steals. His backcourt partner, Collin Parker, was equally instrumental, pouring in a team-high 27 points on 11-of-22 shooting, grabbing six rebounds and dishing out two assists. The Governors’ frontcourt contributed significantly as well, with Rashaud Marshall posting 12 points, seven rebounds and three assists, and Tate McCubbin adding 11 points.
Stetson was led by Collin Kuhl’s 18 points and six rebounds. Ethan Copeland recorded a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds, while Calvin Sirmans distributed eight assists and scored 11 points. Despite connecting on 10 3-pointers, the Hatters struggled with their overall efficiency, shooting just 40.6% from the field and were hampered by their ball-handling against Austin Peay’s active defense.
The Governors dominated several key statistical categories beyond turnovers. They out-assisted Stetson 12-5, recorded 12 steals to the Hatters’ five, and generated 15 fast-break points. While Stetson won the battle on the offensive glass 12-8, they could not convert those extra chances sufficiently to close the gap.
Austin Peay entered the game as a 7.5-point favorite according to sportsbooks, a margin they covered with the 12-point victory. The combined score of 150 points fell under the pregame over/under line of 147. Interstat’s ELO system had given the Governors a 65.5% probability of winning.
The win extends Austin Peay’s recent strong form, marking their fourth consecutive victory and improving their conference record. Stetson, meanwhile, sees a two-game winning streak snapped as they continue to search for consistency in league play.
Austin Peay returns to action Thursday, Jan. 15, hosting Eastern Kentucky. Stetson will also be at home on that date, facing West Georgia. The two teams are scheduled for a rematch in Clarksville, Tennessee, on Saturday, Jan. 24.
