Gillespie Leads Kent State to Tight Win Over Bowling Green in MAC Thriller
KENT, Ohio (Interstat) — In a Mid-American Conference men’s basketball thriller that lived up to its billing as a clash of early-season contenders, Delrecco Gillespie scored 32 points, including the decisive free throws with four seconds remaining, to lift Kent State to a 96-93 victory over Bowling Green on Tuesday night at Memorial Athletics Center.
The Golden Flashes, who improved to 12-3 overall, survived a monumental 30-point, nine-assist performance from Bowling Green guard Javontae Campbell and a furious second-half rally by the Falcons to secure the win in front of 1,688 fans.
The most critical sequence of the game unfolded in the final 10 seconds. With the score tied at 93, Kent State’s Morgan Safford saw his driving layup blocked by Bowling Green’s Troy Glover. Gillespie, the 6-foot-8 forward from Benton Harbor, Michigan, secured the offensive rebound and immediately went back up, converting the putback while being fouled by Glover with 4.1 seconds on the clock. Gillespie calmly sank the ensuing free throw to complete the three-point play and give Kent State a 96-93 lead.
Bowling Green, which fell to 11-5, had one final chance. After a full timeout, the Falcons inbounded to Mayar Wol, whose desperation three-point attempt from the wing as time expired missed, sealing the Golden Flashes’ victory.
The game was a tale of two halves defined by offensive firepower. The first half was a back-and-forth affair featuring 10 lead changes and ending in a 45-45 deadlock. Gillespie had 15 points by the break, while Campbell kept the Falcons level with 13.
Kent State appeared to seize control early in the second half, opening with a 13-5 run fueled by a three-pointer from Jahari Williamson and a jumper from Cian Medley to take a 58-50 lead. The Golden Flashes maintained a cushion for much of the period, leading by as many as nine points. Medley orchestrated the offense masterfully, finishing with 11 points and 10 assists.
But Campbell refused to let Bowling Green fade. The Muskogee, Oklahoma, native scored 17 of his 30 points in the second half, attacking the rim relentlessly. His driving layup with 2:15 left capped a 7-0 Falcons run and tied the game at 90, setting the stage for the dramatic finish.
Gillespie was the cornerstone for Kent State, adding an assist and a block to his game-high point total while playing 38 minutes. He received crucial support from Safford, who scored 22 points and made several key defensive plays, including two blocks. Williamson provided a spark off the bench with 11 points, all from beyond the arc, and Rob Whaley added 11 points and a block.
For Bowling Green, Campbell’s backcourt mate Josiah Shackelford contributed 17 points, while Sam Towns came off the bench to score 13, all in the first half. Glover finished with eight points and three blocks, including the pivotal one in the final seconds that nearly preserved the tie.
Kent State, which entered the game as a 1.5-point favorite, outperformed its 85.6% win probability from the ELO rating system. The combined score of 189 points sailed well over the pregame over/under line of 157.
The victory gives Kent State an early edge in the MAC standings and extends its home winning streak. Bowling Green, coming off a thrilling overtime win at Massachusetts, saw its two-game win streak snapped despite the heroic effort from Campbell.
Kent State travels to face Central Michigan on Saturday. Bowling Green returns home to host Akron, also on Saturday. The two teams will meet again in a rematch in Bowling Green on Feb. 17.
