Northern Colorado at Colorado
BOULDER, Colo. (Interstat) — An in-state men’s basketball matchup with postseason implications is set for Sunday when the Colorado Buffaloes host the Northern Colorado Bears at the Coors Events Center.
Colorado (10-2) enters as a significant favorite, installed at -14.5, but will be wary of a Northern Colorado (9-3) team that has proven resilient in close games. The Buffaloes are looking to rebound from a 77-68 home loss to Stanford on Dec. 20, which snapped a three-game win streak. The Bears are also coming off a loss, falling 86-79 to Denver on the same day.
The game features two of the state’s top backcourt performers. Northern Colorado’s offense runs through guard Brock Wisne, who is averaging 21 points over his last five games. He scored 27 in the loss to Denver and 29 in a road defeat at Texas Tech on Dec. 16. Containing him will be a primary task for Colorado’s defense.
The Buffaloes counter with their own dynamic guard in Barrington Hargress. He has been a consistent facilitator and scorer, averaging 14.6 points and 4.0 assists per game. Hargress posted 16 points and six assists against Stanford and has scored in double figures in nine of Colorado’s 12 contests.
Both teams have shown offensive firepower, reflected in the over/under of 158.5 points. Northern Colorado has played in three overtime games this season, winning two, and averages 86.2 points per game. Colorado averages 84.8 points and has topped 95 points three times.
For the Bears, a win would be a signature non-conference victory before Big Sky play begins next week. For the Buffaloes, it’s a final tune-up before a daunting Big 12 conference slate that starts Jan. 3 at Arizona State. Colorado holds the historical edge in the series, but the Bears’ high-scoring attack promises a challenge.
Tipoff is scheduled for Sunday afternoon in Boulder.
