Northern Colorado Upsets Colorado in Cross-State Showdown
BOULDER, Colo. (Interstat) — In a stunning in-state upset, the Northern Colorado Bears weathered a late rally to defeat the Colorado Buffaloes 86-81 on Sunday at a sold-out Coors Events Center.
The Bears, led by a masterful performance from guard Quinn Denker, never trailed after the opening minute and held off a furious second-half charge from the Buffaloes to claim a signature road victory. Both teams exited the non-conference finale with identical 10-3 records.
Northern Colorado established control early, building a 37-35 halftime lead behind efficient offense. The separation came quickly after the break, as the Bears opened the second half on a 10-2 run, capped by a Denker assist on a Brock Wisne layup, to push their advantage to 47-37.
The Buffaloes, however, refused to capitulate. Sparked by Isaiah Johnson and Barrington Hargress, Colorado methodically chipped away at the deficit. A driving layup by Hargress with 4 minutes, 15 seconds remaining brought the Buffaloes within a single possession at 72-70, sending the crowd of 8,347 into a frenzy. The momentum appeared to fully swing when Sebastian Rancik sank two free throws less than a minute later to tie the game at 76, completing a comeback from a 12-point second-half hole.
The most critical sequence of the game unfolded in the final two minutes. With the score knotted, Colorado had multiple opportunities to take its first lead since 2-0. But the Bears’ defense tightened. After a Wisne turnover, the Buffaloes came up empty on two chances to go ahead, including a blocked shot by Bangot Dak. Northern Colorado then broke the tie at the free-throw line, with Denker calmly sinking two foul shots with 48 seconds left.
Colorado’s last best chance evaporated when Johnson missed a potential go-ahead three-pointer with 26 seconds left. Denker secured the defensive rebound, was fouled, and again made both free throws to extend the lead to 80-76. Ibu Yamazaki and Denker would combine to go 6 for 6 from the line in the final 23 seconds to seal the victory, as Colorado’s last-gasp three-point attempts missed their mark.
Denker, a junior from San Jose, California, was the catalyst for the Bears, finishing with 33 points, eight rebounds, and eight assists in 37 minutes. He scored or assisted on 15 of Northern Colorado’s final 21 points. Yamazaki, from Matsudo, Japan, provided crucial support with 19 points and seven rebounds, including several key baskets to stem Colorado runs.
The Buffaloes were led by Johnson’s 25 points and eight rebounds. Hargress added 18 points and five assists, while Dak contributed 16 points, six rebounds, and two blocks. Despite holding advantages in points in the paint (44-36), points off turnovers (16-5), and fast-break points (17-11), Colorado was unable to overcome Northern Colorado’s offensive execution down the stretch.
The Bears shot efficiently from the field and from three-point range, while Colorado struggled from beyond the arc. Northern Colorado also won at the free-throw line, converting a higher percentage of its attempts.
The result defied pregame expectations, as Colorado had been installed as a 14.5-point favorite, and statistical models gave the Buffaloes an 86.5% probability of victory. The combined score of 167 points went over the posted over/under line of 158.5.
Northern Colorado opens Big Sky Conference play on the road Thursday at Montana State. Colorado begins its Big 12 schedule Saturday at Arizona State.
