Georgia Bulldogs Dominate West Georgia Wolves in Nonconference Tuneup
ATHENS, Ga. (Interstat) — The Georgia Bulldogs showcased their depth and overwhelming athleticism in a dominant 103-74 victory over the visiting West Georgia Wolves in a nonconference men’s basketball game Monday afternoon at a sold-out Stegeman Coliseum.
A crowd of 10,523 watched the Bulldogs improve to 11-1, using a 17-2 run midway through the first half to seize control and never look back. The Wolves, from NCAA Division I’s ASUN Conference, fell to 6-6.
The most important stretch of the game came early, turning a competitive opening into a lopsided affair. After West Georgia’s Shelton Williams-Dryden hit a turnaround jumper to cut Georgia’s lead to 7-2, the Bulldogs unleashed a devastating sequence. It started with a Somto Cyril dunk off a Marcus Millender assist, followed immediately by a Blue Cain steal and dunk. After a West Georgia turnover, Jeremiah Wilkinson found Cain for another dunk, capping a 6-0 spurt in just 23 seconds that forced a Wolves timeout with Georgia leading 13-2.
The Bulldogs’ onslaught continued out of the timeout. A Justin Bailey three-pointer, another Cyril dunk, and two quick layups from Millender extended the run. When it finally ended on a JaVar Daniel three-pointer for West Georgia, Georgia had built a 21-5 lead, effectively deciding the contest before the midway point of the first half.
Georgia’s superiority was evident in every facet. The Bulldogs outscored West Georgia 52-22 in the paint and 24-10 off turnovers, converting 15 Wolves giveaways into easy transition opportunities. Georgia also held a 33-26 edge in fastbreak points. The Bulldogs shot 46 percent from the floor for the game, while West Georgia managed just 38 percent.
Williams-Dryden, a 6-foot-6 junior from Milwaukee, was a bright spot for the Wolves, leading all scorers with 23 points and adding four assists. Malcolm Noel of Peachtree City contributed 16 points. Their efforts kept West Georgia within 46-38 at halftime, but Georgia’s depth proved too much after the break.
The Bulldogs opened the second half on a 19-7 run, powered by Cain and Wilkinson, to push the lead to 20 points and remove any doubt about the outcome. Georgia’s balanced attack featured six players in double figures. Cain, a sophomore from Knoxville, Tennessee, led the Bulldogs with 20 points in just 22 minutes. Wilkinson, from Powder Springs, added 19 points, and Cyril, the 6-foot-11 force from Enugu, Nigeria, controlled the interior with 15 points and four blocked shots.
Millender chipped in 12 points, while Jordan Ross and Kareem Stagg each added 10. For West Georgia, Daniel, a 6-foot-10 forward from Memphis, finished with 15 points and three blocks.
Georgia, which entered the game as a heavy favorite, has now won four straight since its only loss of the season in overtime to Clemson last month. The Bulldogs begin Southeastern Conference play at home against Auburn on Jan. 3. West Georgia, which has faced a challenging nonconference schedule including games against Georgia Tech, UCLA and Nebraska, opens ASUN Conference play at home against Bellarmine on New Year’s Day.
