Utah State Dominates Charlotte in Road Victory
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Interstat) — Utah State rebounded from its first loss of the season with a dominant defensive performance, routing Charlotte 79-53 in a nonconference men’s basketball game Sunday at Halton Arena.
The Aggies, who fell at South Florida three days prior, improved to 8-1 by stifling the 49ers from the opening tip. Charlotte, which dropped to 4-6, managed just 18 field goals on 51 attempts, a frigid 35.3 percent, and committed 18 turnovers that Utah State converted into 29 points.
The most important stretch of the game came late in the first half, as Utah State turned a narrow contest into a commanding lead. Leading 28-25 with just over three minutes remaining before halftime, the Aggies unleashed a 14-2 run to close the period, fueled by their relentless defense and transition offense. The surge included a steal and driving layup by Mason Falslev, a three-pointer from Karson Templin and a layup by MJ Collins just before the buzzer, sending Utah State into the break with a 42-30 advantage.
Charlotte never threatened in the second half. The Aggies opened the period with a 7-2 spurt, pushing the lead to 17 points, and continued to extend it, leading by as many as 29. Utah State’s defense held the 49ers to a season-low in points and an offensive rating of 79.7 on 66 possessions.
Falslev, a guard from Benson, Utah, led all scorers with 22 points, adding five rebounds and six assists in 31 minutes. He was efficient from the floor and a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. Collins added 18 points, three rebounds and three assists, while Templin provided 12 points off the bench.
The Aggies dominated inside, outscoring Charlotte 48-20 in the paint, and capitalized on mistakes, scoring 18 fast-break points to the 49ers’ three. Utah State also took care of the ball, committing only six turnovers.
For Charlotte, Ben Bradford led the way with 13 points. Anton Bonke, the 7-foot-2 center from Vanuatu, grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds and blocked two shots but was limited to seven points. Dezayne Mingo added 10 points.
Utah State shot 50 percent from the field and 84.2 percent from the free-throw line. The Aggies entered the game as a 10.5-point favorite, according to FanDuel Sportsbook, and easily covered. The combined score of 132 points fell well under the over/under line of 143.
The Aggies will host Illinois State next Saturday. Charlotte travels to face the College of Charleston next Sunday.
