Southern at San Jose State

SAN JOSE, Calif. (Interstat) — A dominant first-half performance and a balanced scoring attack propelled San Jose State to an 80-66 victory over Southern on Friday night at the Event Center.

The Spartans seized control early, building a 42-35 halftime lead behind efficient offense and aggressive play. They never relinquished that advantage, methodically extending their lead throughout the second half in front of a crowd of 1,773.

San Jose State’s offense was notably efficient, converting possessions into points at a high rate. The Spartans shot 47.2 percent from the floor and were particularly effective from beyond the arc, making 8 of 18 three-point attempts. A significant advantage came at the free-throw line, where San Jose State made 22 of 29 attempts, compared to Southern’s 11 of 14.

The Spartans were led by a trio of double-digit scorers. Yaphet Moundi, a 6-foot-8 forward from Paris, France, recorded a team-high 21 points. He was complemented by backcourt mates Jermaine Washington of Hemet, California, who scored 17 points, and Colby Garland of Magnolia, Arkansas, who added 16 points and a team-high five assists. Ben Roseborough of Sacramento, California, also chipped in 16 points.

Despite the loss, Southern’s Michael Jacobs kept the Jaguars competitive. The 6-foot-2 guard from Atlanta, Georgia, poured in a game-high 24 points in 27 minutes of action. The Jaguars’ defense was active, recording 11 steals and three blocks, with DaMariee Jones of Bessemer, Alabama, accounting for all three of those blocks.

However, Southern struggled with its shooting, making just 39.3 percent of its field goal attempts and a frigid 25 percent from three-point range. The Jaguars also committed 14 turnovers, which the Spartans converted into key scoring opportunities.

With the win, San Jose State evened its season record at 2-3. Southern fell to 2-4 with the non-conference road loss. The Spartans are scheduled to travel to Palm Desert, California, to face Tulsa on Tuesday. Southern’s next contest is at Northwestern State on Nov. 29.
