Villanova Tops La Salle in City 6 Matchup

PHILADELPHIA (Interstat) — In a city series matchup defined by defensive pressure and offensive struggles, the Villanova Wildcats methodically dispatched the La Salle Explorers 70-55 in a men’s NCAA Division I basketball game Wednesday night at Tom Gola Arena.

A crowd of 2,653 watched as Villanova never trailed, using a stifling defensive performance and a game-high 17 points from Matthew Hodge to secure the victory and improve its season record to 4-1. La Salle, led by 17 points from Eric Acker, fell to 2-3.

The Wildcats set the tone from the opening tip, forcing two quick La Salle turnovers and jumping out to a 7-0 lead within the first minute of play. A three-pointer from Hodge and a layup from Duke Brennan, both off assists from Tyler Perkins, ignited the early run from which the Explorers would never fully recover.

Villanova’s defense was the story of the first half, consistently disrupting La Salle’s offensive flow. The Explorers committed 10 of their 15 total turnovers before halftime and struggled to find any consistency from beyond the arc, finishing the game just 3 of 13 from three-point range.

Despite the defensive dominance, Villanova’s own offensive execution was not always crisp. The Wildcats built their lead through superior efficiency, converting their possessions at a much higher rate. Villanova scored 70 points from 59 possessions, an offensive rating of 119.1, while La Salle managed only 55 points from 61 possessions, an offensive rating of 89.9.

The Wildcats took a 37-28 lead into halftime, but the Explorers showed brief signs of life early in the second period. A driving layup from Acker cut the Villanova lead to nine points, but the Wildcats responded immediately. On the ensuing possession, Bryce Lindsay connected on a three-pointer, assisted by Perkins, to push the lead back to 12 and quell the potential rally.

La Salle could not mount a sustained challenge, as Villanova’s balanced scoring and control of the glass proved too much to overcome. The Wildcats shot 51.9 percent from the floor on 28-of-54 shooting, while holding La Salle to 43.1 percent on 22-of-51 shooting.

Hodge, a 6-foot-8 forward from Belmar, New Jersey, was the offensive catalyst for Villanova, efficiently scoring his 17 points. He was complemented by a strong backcourt performance. Acaden Lewis, from Washington, D.C., orchestrated the offense with 12 points and a game-high six assists. Tyler Perkins added 13 points, and Bryce Lindsay chipped in 10 points and four assists.

For La Salle, Acker’s 17 points and three assists were a bright spot, as were the 13 points and three assists from Rob Dockery. However, the Explorers’ offense was hampered by Villanova’s active hands, which generated six steals and two blocks.

The victory extends Villanova’s winning streak to three games following a season-opening loss at BYU. The Wildcats will look to continue their momentum when they host Old Dominion on Tuesday.

La Salle, which has now lost two of its last three, will seek to get back on track at home against Lancaster Bible on Saturday.
