Illinois State vs. Southern California
INGLEWOOD, Calif. (Interstat) — Rodney Rice recorded a triple-double with 21 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists to lead Southern California to a decisive 87-67 victory over Illinois State in a nonconference men’s basketball game Friday night at Intuit Dome.
The Trojans improved to 3-0, while the Redbirds fell to 1-2.
Southern California never trailed, establishing control early with a 40-26 halftime lead. The Trojans’ offense operated with high efficiency, scoring 87 points on just 69 possessions for an offensive rating of 126.8. Illinois State, by contrast, managed just 67 points on 71 possessions, an offensive rating of 94.1.
Rice’s all-around performance set the tone, but he was far from alone. Gabe Dynes, the 7-foot-5 center, added 14 points and three blocks, while Chad Baker-Mazara provided a scoring punch off the bench with 18 points. Jacob Cofie anchored the defense with six rebounds and three blocks.
The Trojans dominated several key statistical categories, forcing 10 Illinois State turnovers while committing only four. That led to a 15-4 advantage in points off turnovers. Southern California also outscored the Redbirds 13-4 on fast breaks and recorded seven blocks as a team.
Illinois State struggled mightily with its shooting, connecting on just 24 of 70 attempts from the field for 34.3%. Their woes were particularly pronounced from beyond the arc, where they made only 7 of 32 three-point attempts. Tyreek Coleman led the Redbirds with 16 points, and Johnny Kinziger added 15.
Despite the loss, Illinois State won the battle on the offensive glass, grabbing 15 rebounds to Southern California’s nine, and shot an efficient 12 of 13 from the free-throw line. It was not enough, however, to overcome the Trojans’ superior ball movement and defensive pressure, which held the Redbirds to just two assists for the entire game.
Southern California shot 50.9% from the field and capitalized on its trips to the foul line, making 23 of 35 free throws.
The game’s total points went under the projected over/under line of 155.5.
