Rice Outlasts Texas A&M-Commerce in Second-Half Surge
HOUSTON (Interstat) — A dominant second-half shooting performance from beyond the arc propelled the Rice Owls to a 71-64 victory over the Texas A&M-Commerce Lions in a non-conference men’s basketball game Friday night at Tudor Fieldhouse.
In a game defined by offensive efficiency, the Owls used a blistering 11-for-21 performance from three-point range to overcome a stubborn Lions squad that controlled the interior. Rice improved its season record to 2-2, while Texas A&M-Commerce fell to 1-3.
The contest was a tale of two halves, with the first 20 minutes a tightly contested, defensive struggle. The Lions took a narrow 25-26 lead into the break, largely on the strength of their work in the paint. The second half, however, belonged to the Owls, who erupted for 45 points. Rice’s offense operated with precision, scoring 71 points from just 64 possessions for an elite offensive rating of 110.7. The Lions, by contrast, managed 64 points from 68 possessions, an offensive rating of 93.9.
Rice’s offensive explosion was fueled by a balanced scoring attack. Jalen Smith led all scorers with 18 points, adding five rebounds and two assists. Trae Broadnax and Dallas Hobbs each chipped in 15 points, with Broadnax pulling down a team-high seven rebounds and Hobbs dishing out four assists. Nick Anderson was also instrumental in the win, scoring 14 points, all of which came in the second half.
The Lions were led by Noah Pagotto, who finished with 14 points and five rebounds. Ronnie Harrison added 10 points and three assists for Texas A&M-Commerce.
While the Lions held a significant 38-22 advantage in points in the paint and outshot the Owls from the field overall, 26-of-53 to 24-of-51, Rice’s overwhelming success from long range proved to be the decisive factor. Texas A&M-Commerce connected on just 4 of its 15 attempts from three-point land.
The game remained competitive throughout the final period. After Rice built a lead, the Lions continued to attack the basket, keeping the pressure on the Owls. However, every time Texas A&M-Commerce threatened to close the gap, Rice answered with a critical three-pointer. Key second-half triples from Hobbs, Anderson, and Broadnax consistently stifled the Lions’ momentum.
Both teams were nearly even in several statistical categories. Rice committed 15 turnovers to the Lions’ 14. The Owls held a slight edge in steals, 7-6, and assists, 7-6. Texas A&M-Commerce blocked four shots to Rice’s three. The Owls won the battle on the offensive glass, securing nine offensive rebounds to the Lions’ five.
The announced attendance at Tudor Fieldhouse was 1,117.
Texas A&M-Commerce will look to rebound when it returns home to face Dallas Christian on Wednesday, Nov. 19. Rice faces a tough road test, traveling to face Tennessee on Monday, Nov. 17.
