Arizona State Routs Southern Utah in Season Opener Behind Efficient Offense
TEMPE, Ariz. (Interstat) — In a dominant season-opening performance, the Arizona State Sun Devils used a stifling defensive effort and a balanced scoring attack to defeat the Southern Utah Thunderbirds 81-64 on Tuesday night at a raucous Wells Fargo Arena.
A crowd of 7,513 watched as the Sun Devils seized control of the game early and never looked back, leading wire-to-wire to begin their campaign with a victory. The Thunderbirds, conversely, start their season with a defeat, struggling to find an offensive rhythm against Arizona State’s length and pressure.
The game was decided by a stark contrast in offensive efficiency. While Southern Utah managed to score 64 points, they required 75 possessions to do so, resulting in a meager offensive rating of 85.6. Arizona State, meanwhile, was far more effective, posting 81 points on just 72 possessions for a robust offensive rating of 111.7. The Sun Devils’ superior shooting was the story of the night, as they connected on 49.2 percent of their field goals compared to the Thunderbirds’ 37.1 percent. The discrepancy from beyond the arc was even more pronounced, with Arizona State hitting 9 of 23 three-point attempts while Southern Utah labored to a 4-of-25 performance from deep.
Southern Utah kept the game competitive for stretches by dominating the glass, hauling in 14 offensive rebounds to Arizona State’s 8, which led to a 44-36 advantage in points in the paint. However, they were unable to capitalize on those second chances sufficiently to close the gap, largely due to their frigid outside shooting and 15 turnovers.
Arizona State’s victory was a collective effort, led by a standout performance from Massamba Diop. The forward was a force on both ends, scoring 14 points, grabbing 5 rebounds, and swatting away 3 shots in 27 minutes of action. His presence in the paint was a constant deterrent for Thunderbird drivers.
He was complemented superbly by Allen Mukeba, who provided a massive spark off the bench. In just 16 minutes, Mukeba filled the stat sheet with 11 points, 6 rebounds, and a game-high 4 blocks, altering countless other shots. Anthony Johnson led all Sun Devil scorers with 17 points, adding 4 rebounds and 3 assists, while Maurice Odum orchestrated the offense with a game-high 8 assists to go with 9 points.
For Southern Utah, Elijah Duval shouldered the scoring load, finishing with 17 points. Isaiah Cottrell was a bright spot inside, contributing 11 points, 7 rebounds, and 2 blocks. Jaiden Feroah and Cale Barclay each pulled down 7 rebounds, with Feroah adding 8 points and 2 blocks.
The Sun Devils set the tone from the opening tip, racing out to a 40-28 halftime lead. They consistently generated high-percentage looks and capitalized on Southern Utah’s mistakes, scoring 24 fastbreak points to the Thunderbirds’ 11. Every time Southern Utah threatened to make a run in the second half, Arizona State had an answer, often in the form of a defensive stop that led to an easy transition basket or a timely three-pointer.
The win moves Arizona State to 1-0 on the young season, while Southern Utah falls to 0-1. The Sun Devils will look to build on this momentum when they host Utah Tech on Sunday. The Thunderbirds will seek their first win of the year when they return home to face Texas-Rio Grande Valley on Saturday.
