Iowa State at Arizona

Preview: Iowa State Cyclones at Arizona Wildcats

TUCSON, Ariz. (Interstat) — A marquee Big 12 showdown featuring two of the nation’s top teams is set for Monday night when the Iowa State Cyclones visit the Arizona Wildcats at McKale Center.

Arizona (27-2), the conference leader, enters as a heavy favorite, installed at -7.5, and looks to continue its dominant season on its home floor. The Wildcats are coming off an emphatic 84-61 victory over Kansas last Saturday, showcasing the depth and firepower that has defined their season. Sophomore guard Brayden Burries has been a catalyst, averaging 18.3 points over his last seven games, including a 24-point performance in a key road win at Baylor.

Iowa State (24-5), however, presents one of Arizona’s toughest tests to date. The Cyclones boast a formidable resume but are looking to rebound from an 82-73 home loss to Texas Tech last Saturday. Their success hinges on the play of standout guard Joshua Jefferson, who is averaging 15.1 points and 4.7 assists over the same seven-game stretch. Jefferson scored 22 points in the loss to Texas Tech, and his ability to facilitate and score will be critical against Arizona’s pressure.

The matchup features a stark contrast in recent momentum. Arizona has won 10 of its last 11, with its only blemishes a narrow overtime loss to Texas Tech and a road defeat at Kansas. Iowa State has been more inconsistent in February, alternating wins and losses over its past six games, though its victories include impressive wins over Houston and Kansas.

Defense will be a focal point. Iowa State’s physical, switching defense, which held opponents under 60 points in several conference wins, will aim to disrupt Arizona’s high-powered offense, which averages over 80 points per game. The battle in the paint and on the perimeter will likely dictate the pace, with the over/under set at 147.5.

This game carries significant weight for postseason seeding and conference supremacy. A win for Arizona would solidify its hold on the top seed in the Big 12 tournament, while Iowa State seeks a statement road victory to bolster its own case for a high NCAA tournament seed.

Tip-off is scheduled for 9 p.m. EST Monday at McKale Center.
