Wildcats Dominate Cyclones in Nonconference Showdown

TUCSON, Ariz. (Interstat) — In a marquee nonconference clash showcasing the depth and defensive prowess of one of the nation’s elite teams, the Arizona Wildcats methodically dispatched the Iowa State Cyclones 73-57 on Monday night at a sold-out McKale Center.

A crowd of 14,688 watched the Wildcats, now 28-2, use a stifling defensive effort and a balanced offensive attack to build a commanding first-half lead and never let the visiting Cyclones, who fell to 24-6, mount a serious challenge. The game, organized by the Big 12, pitted two of the country’s top teams in a late-season test.

The most critical phase of the contest came early, as Arizona’s defense set an immediate and unrelenting tone. The Wildcats forced Iowa State into a series of difficult shots and turnovers on its opening possessions, holding the Cyclones scoreless for nearly the first three minutes. While Arizona’s own offense started slowly, a 3-pointer from Brayden Burries of San Bernardino, California, at the 17:36 mark broke the seal and ignited a 12-point first-half lead that would only expand.

Iowa State, which entered the game having won eight of its last ten, struggled to find any offensive rhythm against Arizona’s length and activity. The Cyclones shot poorly from the field throughout the night and were plagued by 15 turnovers, which the Wildcats converted into 19 points. Arizona’s interior defense, led by 7-foot-2 center Motiejus Krivas of Siauliai, Lithuania, and 6-foot-8 forward Tobe Awaka of Hyde Park, New York, was particularly disruptive, combining for five blocked shots and altering countless others.

Jaden Bradley, a guard from Rochester, New York, led all scorers with 17 points for Arizona, showcasing an efficient offensive game and playing a team-high 35 minutes. Krivas provided a strong inside presence with 13 points, while Awaka added 10 points and a game-high nine rebounds off the bench. The Wildcats’ depth was on full display, with Burries scoring 11, Anthony Dell’Orso of Melbourne, Australia, contributing eight points and four assists, and Dwayne Aristode of Lelystad, Netherlands, adding eight points.

Iowa State was led by the backcourt duo of Tamin Lipsey of Ames, Iowa, and Jamarion Batemon of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, who each scored 17 points. However, they were largely contained by Arizona’s perimeter defense, with Lipsey committing five turnovers. No other Cyclone reached double figures, and the team’s leading rebounder, Blake Buchanan of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, was limited to four points.

Arizona took control with a 37-25 lead into halftime and maintained a double-digit advantage throughout the entire second half. Every time Iowa State managed a small run, the Wildcats had an answer, often from a different player. A key sequence early in the second half saw Iowa State cut the deficit to 12 points, only for Arizona to respond with a 7-0 spurt capped by a Krivas 3-pointer, pushing the lead back to 19 and effectively sealing the outcome.

The Wildcats’ victory extended their home winning streak and solidified their status as a national championship contender as the regular season winds down. For Iowa State, the loss snapped a two-game winning streak and highlighted the offensive challenges they face against top-tier defensive opponents. The Cyclones will look to rebound in their final regular-season game this weekend.

Arizona, which entered the game as a 7.5-point favorite according to sportsbooks, easily covered the spread. The combined score of 130 points fell well under the pregame over/under line of 147.5, a testament to the defensive struggle imposed primarily by the Wildcats.

Both teams conclude their regular seasons on Saturday, with Iowa State hosting Arizona State and Arizona traveling to face Colorado.
