Stephen F. Austin Dominates Early, Cruises Past Houston Christian
HOUSTON (Interstat) — A dominant first-half defensive performance by Stephen F. Austin rendered any second-half drama moot as the Lumberjacks cruised to a 77-56 victory over Houston Christian in a men’s NCAA Division I basketball game Saturday afternoon at Sharp Gymnasium.
The Lumberjacks, improving to 26-4 overall, built an insurmountable 26-point halftime lead by holding the Huskies to a historically poor shooting performance over the opening 20 minutes. Houston Christian managed just 16 first-half points, connecting on only 1 of 17 attempts from three-point range for the entire game.
Stephen F. Austin’s Keon Thompson led all scorers with 17 points, adding three assists in 25 minutes. His backcourt mate, Lateef Patrick, contributed 13 points, with 11 coming in the first half as the Lumberjacks seized control early.
The game’s decisive stretch came immediately after the opening tip. Stephen F. Austin’s Chrishawn Christmas stole the ball on Houston Christian’s first possession, leading to a Patrick layup just 39 seconds into the game. Thompson followed with a three-pointer on the next trip, and after a Huskies turnover, Jerald Colonel’s layup forced a Houston Christian timeout with the score 7-0 just over three minutes in.
Houston Christian, which fell to 11-19, did not score its first field goal until a Kylin Green jumper with 16:27 remaining in the half, by which time Stephen F. Austin led 9-2. The Huskies’ offensive struggles were compounded by turnovers and an inability to solve the Lumberjacks’ defensive pressure, shooting 23.1% from the floor in the first half.
Stephen F. Austin’s lead ballooned to 42-16 at the intermission, a margin built more on stifling defense than explosive offense. The Lumberjacks shot 48.5% in the half but also forced eight Houston Christian turnovers.
The second half saw a role reversal, with Houston Christian outscoring Stephen F. Austin 40-35. The Huskies shot 51.6% from the field after halftime, led by Trent Johnson’s seven points and five assists. Ahjany Lee provided a spark off the bench with eight points and two blocks in just 12 minutes.
However, the Lumberjacks’ lead never dipped below 19 points. Every time Houston Christian strung together a few baskets, Stephen F. Austin answered, often through Thompson or a balanced supporting cast. Marcus Scurry added 10 points off the bench, while Narit Chotikavanic and Gediminas Alisas each chipped in eight.
Stephen F. Austin finished the game shooting 49.2% from the field and converted 11 of 14 free throws. Houston Christian ended at 41.1% shooting but was doomed by its 5.9% performance from beyond the arc. Both teams recorded four assists and four steals, but the Huskies’ nine blocks, led by Lee and Mambourou Mara, were a rare bright spot.
The game was played before an announced crowd of 789. Stephen F. Austin will look to continue its successful season on the road at Incarnate Word on Monday. Houston Christian returns home to host Lamar, also on Monday.
The victory completed a regular-season sweep for the Lumberjacks, who defeated the Huskies 85-67 in Nacogdoches on Jan. 10. Stephen F. Austin’s defensive intensity from the opening tip established a tone that Houston Christian could never overcome, making the first ten minutes of the game the most critical sequence in securing the road win.
