Florida International at Louisiana Tech
Preview: Florida International at Louisiana Tech
RUSTON, La. (Interstat) — A key Conference USA rematch with postseason implications is set for Saturday when the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs host the Florida International Golden Panthers at the Thomas Assembly Center.
Louisiana Tech (16-12) looks to avenge a 77-64 road loss to FIU just two weeks ago and solidify its standing in the conference. The Bulldogs are coming off a narrow 72-70 home victory over Missouri State on Thursday, fueled by a season-high 27 points from guard DJ Dudley. The junior has been a consistent offensive force, averaging 18.4 points over his last five games.
Florida International (13-14) aims to complete a regular-season sweep and climb back to .500. The Golden Panthers edged Missouri State 70-67 last Saturday but have alternated wins and losses in their last six contests. Their victory over Louisiana Tech on Feb. 14 was anchored by a dominant defensive performance from forward Hamed Olayinka, who recorded 17 rebounds and five blocks to go with 11 points.
Olayinka remains a pivotal player for FIU, averaging 10.3 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.0 blocks over the last six games. Containing Dudley will likely be a primary defensive focus for Olayinka and the Golden Panthers.
The Bulldogs have been stronger at home this season, boasting a 12-4 record in Ruston compared to a 4-8 mark on the road. FIU is just 4-9 in true road games.
With both teams having just two regular-season games remaining after this contest, securing a win is critical for seeding in the upcoming Conference USA tournament. Louisiana Tech currently holds the better overall record, but FIU proved earlier this month it possesses the formula to disrupt the Bulldogs.
Saturday’s tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. CST. Louisiana Tech will visit Liberty next Thursday, while Florida International will host Middle Tennessee to begin its final homestand.
