Bucknell at Lehigh
FOUNTAIN HILL, Pa. (Interstat) — A pair of Patriot League rivals heading in opposite directions will meet Saturday when Lehigh hosts Bucknell at Stabler Arena.
The Mountain Hawks (14-16) have won three of their last four, including a 78-73 road victory at American on Wednesday. The Bison (9-21) snapped a five-game skid with a 75-73 win at Army that same afternoon, securing just their second victory in their last ten contests.
Lehigh will look to continue its late-season push behind junior forward Hank Alvey, who is averaging 20.3 points over his last four games. He scored 24 points with three assists and three blocks in the win over American. His matchup with Bucknell’s workhorse, Achile Spadone, will be central to the contest.
Spadone, a senior guard, is in the midst of a stellar individual season, routinely logging heavy minutes and stuffing the stat sheet. He is coming off a 21-point, 8-rebound, 3-assist performance in 40 minutes against Army. Over his last five games, he is averaging 19.6 points and 6.2 rebounds. He will need another all-around effort to counter Alvey and a balanced Lehigh attack that saw Jalen Vazquez (15 points) and Nasir Whitlock (16 points) contribute significantly in the midweek win.
The teams last met on Jan. 3 in Lewisburg, where Bucknell earned a 72-65 victory. Spadone was instrumental in that win, and containing him will be a priority for a Lehigh defense that has allowed an average of 68.2 points during its recent 3-1 stretch.
For Bucknell, building on the momentum of the narrow road win at Army is critical. Alongside Spadone, forwards Pat Curtin (16 points, 11 rebounds vs. Army) and Amon Dörries (23 points) provided vital secondary scoring that must travel to Fountain Hill.
Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. EST on Saturday, Feb. 28, in the regular-season finale for both programs. With the Patriot League Tournament looming, Lehigh aims to secure a winning home record and positive momentum, while Bucknell seeks to prove its recent victory was a turning point and not an anomaly.
