Lehigh Outlasts Bucknell in High-Scoring Patriot League Affair
FOUNTAIN HILL, Pa. (Interstat) — In a game defined by offensive efficiency and a standout performance from its star guard, Lehigh secured a regular-season sweep of its Patriot League schedule with an 89-79 victory over Bucknell on Saturday afternoon at Stabler Arena.
The Mountain Hawks, led by a career-high 32 points from junior Nasir Whitlock, shot a blistering 58.8% from the field and a near-perfect 94.7% from the free-throw line to improve to 15-16 overall. The Bison, despite a valiant 28-point effort from sophomore center Amon Dörries, fell to 9-22.
The most critical phase of the contest came late in the first half, transforming what had been a tight battle into a cushion Lehigh would never relinquish. With Bucknell holding a 40-37 lead after an Amon Dörries three-pointer with just over seven minutes remaining, the Mountain Hawks closed the period on a decisive 10-0 run. The surge was fueled by stifling defense that forced three Bison turnovers and capitalized on efficient offense. Whitlock ignited the run with a three-pointer, Hank Alvey added a dunk off a Joshua Ingram assist, and after a Bucknell miss, Peter Kramer buried another three-pointer from a Whitlock pass. The half concluded with Ingram drawing a foul and sinking two free throws with 28 seconds left, sending Lehigh into the locker room with a 47-40 advantage.
That seven-point halftime margin proved insurmountable for the Bison. Lehigh’s offensive machine, operating with precision, never allowed the lead to dip below five points in the second half. Every time Bucknell threatened to string together stops, the Mountain Hawks answered, often at the free-throw line where they made 18 of 19 attempts.
Whitlock, a guard from Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, was the orchestrator, adding seven assists to his scoring total. His ability to penetrate and finish, or draw defenders and find open teammates, kept the Lehigh offense flowing. He was complemented powerfully by senior forward Hank Alvey, who scored 22 points on 8-of-11 shooting, and Ingram, who directed the offense with 11 points and eight assists.
Bucknell’s offense was not without its firepower. Dörries, the 6-foot-11 sophomore from Potsdam, Germany, was a force inside, making 12 of his 22 field goal attempts. Guard Pat Curtin added 22 points, and Achile Spadone chipped in 13. The Bison actually won several statistical battles, including assists (10-5), steals (10-5), and turnovers forced (14-11). However, they could not overcome Lehigh’s superior shooting percentages and their own struggles to get consistent stops during key moments.
The game’s tempo was brisk, with Lehigh scoring 89 points on just 67 possessions for an elite offensive rating of 132.8. Bucknell’s 79 points on 69 possessions, a solid 114.8 rating, was simply outpaced by the home team’s scorching efficiency. The Mountain Hawks made 11 of 21 three-point attempts, while the Bison hit 9 of 21 from beyond the arc.
The victory gave Lehigh a regular-season series split, avenging a 72-65 loss in Lewisburg on Jan. 3. It also continued a strong late-season push for the Mountain Hawks, who have now won three of their last four games heading into the Patriot League tournament. For Bucknell, the loss marked another in a difficult season, though the performance of Dörries and Curtin provided highlights.
An announced crowd of 1,146 at Stabler Arena watched as Lehigh consistently beat the Bucknell defense with ball movement and sharp shooting, particularly during the game-changing run to close the first half that ultimately decided the contest.
