Fairfield Rallies in Second Half to Defeat Sacred Heart

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (Interstat) — In a game defined by a decisive second-half surge, the Fairfield Stags overcame a halftime deficit to defeat the Sacred Heart Pioneers 78-68 in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men’s basketball game Friday night before a crowd of 3,565 at Webster Bank Arena.

The victory improved Fairfield to 17-11 overall this season, while Sacred Heart fell to 12-17. The Stags swept the regular-season series, having also won 92-87 in overtime on Feb. 5.

The most critical phase of the contest came early in the second half, where Fairfield transformed a five-point halftime disadvantage into a commanding double-digit lead. After trailing 37-32 at the break, the Stags erupted with a 13-2 run over the first four minutes of the second period. The burst was fueled by aggressive defense and efficient scoring, turning Sacred Heart turnovers into quick points. Braden Sparks, who led all scorers with 21 points, ignited the run with a 3-pointer, and Brandon Benjamin capped it with a dunk off an assist from Declan Wucherpfennig, forcing a Sacred Heart timeout with the Stags ahead 45-39.

Sacred Heart never fully recovered from that blitz. Fairfield continued to apply pressure, extending its lead to as many as 16 points midway through the half. The Stags’ defense, which had allowed 37 first-half points, tightened considerably, holding the Pioneers to just 31 points after halftime while scoring 46 of their own. The Pioneers shot erratically and committed costly turnovers during Fairfield’s pivotal run, unable to match the Stags’ intensity or execution.

The first half had been a back-and-forth affair, with Sacred Heart building its lead primarily from beyond the arc. The Pioneers connected on several early 3-pointers, including two from Nyle Ralph-Beyer, who finished with 14 points. Dashon Gittens led Sacred Heart with 16 points, and Yann Farell added 14. However, the Pioneers’ offensive flow disintegrated after halftime against Fairfield’s adjusted defensive pressure.

Alongside Sparks’ 21 points, Fairfield received significant contributions from its frontcourt. Brandon Benjamin dominated inside, scoring 18 points and providing a formidable rim-protecting presence. Wucherpfennig was a key facilitator and scorer, adding 10 points, while Eric Mejia provided a vital spark off the bench with 11 points. The Stags’ balanced attack and superior second-half shooting proved too much for the Pioneers to overcome.

Sacred Heart guard Mekhi Conner orchestrated the Pioneer offense with a game-high seven assists, but the team’s collective shooting went cold during Fairfield’s game-changing run. Despite a late push that cut the deficit to single digits in the final minutes, the Pioneers could not string together enough stops to seriously threaten the Stags’ lead.

Entering the game, Fairfield was projected as a 4.5-point favorite by oddsmakers, a margin they covered with their second-half performance. The combined score of 146 points fell well under the pregame over/under line of 155.5.

Fairfield, which entered the contest with a 65.8% win probability according to Interstat’s ELO system, will next travel to face Quinnipiac on Sunday. Sacred Heart looks to rebound on the road at Marist, also on Sunday.
