Kansas Holds Off Oklahoma State Rally for Big 12 Road Win
STILLWATER, Okla. (Interstat) — A blistering first-half offensive display and a dominant defensive effort throughout propelled the Kansas Jayhawks to a decisive 81-69 victory over the Oklahoma State Cowboys in a Big 12 Conference men’s basketball game Wednesday night at Gallagher-Iba Arena.
The Jayhawks, improving to 20-6 overall, seized control from the opening tip and never trailed, building a 43-29 halftime lead that proved insurmountable for the home team. The Cowboys, who fell to 16-10, mounted a more competitive second-half effort but could never trim the deficit to single digits against a disciplined Kansas squad.
The most critical phase of the game was its opening ten minutes, where Kansas established its authority. The Jayhawks raced out to a 16-1 lead, fueled by suffocating defense and efficient shooting. The run was spearheaded by freshman guard Darryn Peterson, who scored 11 of his game-high 23 points during this early surge, including three 3-pointers. Oklahoma State missed 10 of its first 11 shots from the field and committed four early turnovers, digging a hole from which it could not escape.
Peterson’s explosive scoring off the bench, achieved in just 18 minutes of action, provided the offensive spark. His backcourt mate, Elmarko Jackson, added 14 points and four assists, providing steady ball-handling and timely shooting. The Jayhawks’ frontcourt also made a significant impact, with Bryson Tiller contributing 10 points, seven rebounds and two blocks, and Flory Bidunga anchoring the paint with eight points, four blocks and relentless interior defense.
Oklahoma State was led by Parsa Fallah, who battled inside for 21 points. Anthony Roy added 16 points, four assists and three steals, but the Cowboys’ offense never found a consistent rhythm. They shot a frigid 34.8% from the field and an even more damaging 25% from 3-point range, making just 7 of 28 attempts. Kansas, by contrast, connected on 11 of 24 from beyond the arc, a 45.8% clip that underscored its offensive efficiency.
While the Cowboys won the battle in transition, outscoring Kansas 18-10 in fastbreak points, and forced 12 Jayhawk turnovers, they could not overcome their own shooting woes or contain Kansas’s balanced attack. The Jayhawks assisted on only five of their 28 field goals, indicative of a game often won through individual creation and defensive stops, but they outscored Oklahoma State 32-26 in the paint and protected the rim with seven total blocks.
Defensively, Kansas held Oklahoma State to an offensive rating of 95.9 points per 100 possessions, while posting a robust 113.1 rating on their own end. This disparity in efficiency, established during the game-opening run, defined the evening.
The announced crowd of 9,085 saw the Cowboys fight back to outscore Kansas 40-38 in the second half, but each mini-run was answered by the visitors. A key sequence came early in the second half when, after Oklahoma State cut the lead to 14, Jackson and Tre White hit consecutive 3-pointers to push the advantage back to 20 and effectively end any lingering threat. White finished with 16 points.
Kansas, which entered the game as a 7.5-point favorite according to sportsbooks, covered the spread. The combined score of 150 fell under the pregame over/under line of 154.5. Interstat’s ELO system had given Kansas a 74.6% probability of winning.
The Jayhawks, rebounding from a road loss at Iowa State their last time out, will look to carry this momentum into a pivotal home matchup against Cincinnati on Saturday. Oklahoma State, which has now dropped three of its last four, hits the road to face Colorado, also on Saturday.
