Fairfield Edges Marist in Tight Metro Atlantic Contest
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (Interstat) — In a game defined by defensive pressure and critical mistakes, the Fairfield Stags edged the Marist Red Foxes 63-60 in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men’s basketball clash on Saturday night at Webster Bank Arena.
The contest, played before a crowd of 2,090, was a stark reversal from the teams’ meeting just three weeks prior, when Marist cruised to an 82-67 victory. This time, Fairfield’s relentless defense, which generated 23 points off 12 Marist turnovers, proved the decisive factor in a tense, back-and-forth affair.
Marist guard Justin Menard, a native of Higganum, Connecticut, led all scorers with 18 points in 35 minutes, but his efforts were ultimately undone by a team-wide struggle to handle the Stags’ defensive intensity. The Red Foxes managed only two assists against 12 turnovers, a telling statistic that underscored their disjointed offensive performance.
Fairfield was led by guard Braden Sparks, who scored a team-high 20 points, including a crucial pair of free throws with 12 seconds remaining to extend the lead to three. Forward Declan Wucherpfennig added 14 points and was a disruptive force defensively, while forward Brandon Benjamin anchored the interior with 13 points, five blocks, and three steals.
The game’s most pivotal sequence occurred in the final 30 seconds. Trailing 59-57, Marist’s Parby Kabamba, who had been quiet from deep, sank a clutch 3-pointer from the wing off an assist from Menard to put the Red Foxes ahead 60-59 with just 15 seconds on the clock.
Fairfield immediately inbounded and pushed the ball upcourt. Wucherpfennig received a pass near the elbow, drove decisively to the basket, and converted a difficult layup through traffic to reclaim the lead for the Stags at 61-60 with only 6.6 seconds remaining.
Marist called a timeout to advance the ball but never got a clean look at a potential winner. Their ensuing inbounds pass was deflected, leading to a scramble and a foul on Sparks with 1.2 seconds left. Sparks calmly sank both free throws to seal the 63-60 victory. The Red Foxes’ desperation heave from beyond half-court at the buzzer was off target.
The contest was a defensive grind from the outset. Both teams shot under 42% from the field, with Fairfield connecting on 23 of 56 attempts and Marist making 21 of 55. The Stags’ advantage came from capitalizing on Marist’s mistakes, outscoring the Red Foxes 23-7 in points off turnovers. Fairfield also recorded nine steals and five blocks, consistently disrupting Marist’s offensive flow.
Marist held a narrow 25-28 lead at halftime, but the teams played to a 35-35 draw in the second half. Jadin Collins-Roberts supported Menard with 14 points for the Red Foxes, who fell to 16-8 overall and saw a three-game winning streak snapped.
For Fairfield, the win marked a measure of revenge and improved their record to 16-10. The Stags’ backcourt of Sparks and Antione Williams, who contributed six points and four assists, controlled the tempo and consistently applied pressure that Marist could not solve in the final moments.
With the victory, Fairfield also gained a key tiebreaker edge in the MAAC standings, splitting the season series after the earlier loss in Poughkeepsie. The game’s outcome was a slight upset according to predictive metrics, which had favored Marist by a narrow margin.
Both teams continue MAAC play next week. Marist travels to face Merrimack on Thursday, while Fairfield visits Saint Peter’s next Sunday.
