La Salle at Saint Louis

ST. LOUIS (Interstat) — The Saint Louis Billikens, boasting one of the nation’s most dominant records, will look to continue their march through the Atlantic 10 Conference when they host the struggling La Salle Explorers on Saturday at Chaifetz Arena.

Saint Louis (22-1, 10-0 A-10) has been nearly flawless this season, carrying a 15-game winning streak into the matchup. Their lone loss came in non-conference play. The Billikens’ offense has been a juggernaut, averaging 88.5 points per game during their current streak. They previously defeated La Salle 84-72 in Philadelphia on Jan. 10.

A key contributor in that first meeting was sophomore guard Brady Dunlap, who scored 17 points off the bench. Dunlap is coming off a 22-point performance in just 22 minutes in Tuesday’s 91-82 win at Davidson. He leads a deep and efficient Saint Louis attack that features five players averaging double-figure scoring, including standout forward Robbie Avila.

La Salle (7-16, 3-7) enters on a three-game skid and faces a monumental challenge. The Explorers have shown flashes, with home wins over Dayton and Saint Bonaventure in January, but consistency has eluded them. Their success often hinges on the play of junior guard Jaden Johnson, who is coming off a 16-point, 8-assist effort in a 71-61 loss at Loyola Chicago on Tuesday. Johnson also had 10 points and six assists against Saint Louis last month.

The Billikens’ high-powered offense, which has topped 100 points twice in conference play, will test a La Salle defense that has allowed an average of 73.2 points per game. Saint Louis also holds a significant rebounding advantage, ranking among the national leaders.

For La Salle to pull a historic upset, they will need to control the tempo, limit turnovers and find scoring beyond Johnson. For Saint Louis, the task is to avoid a letdown against a heavy underdog as they pursue a perfect conference season.

Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. CST Saturday. Saint Louis will visit Loyola Chicago next Friday, while La Salle hosts VCU next Wednesday.
