Mirhosseini, Golden Lions Outlast Braves in SWAC Shootout
PINE BLUFF, Ark. (Interstat) — In a game defined by a blistering start and a frantic finish, Arkansas-Pine Bluff survived a furious second-half rally from Alcorn State to secure an 84-77 victory in a Southwest Athletic Conference men’s basketball game Saturday at the HPER Complex.
The Golden Lions, led by a career-high 20 points from guard Alex Mirhosseini, built a commanding 15-point halftime lead only to watch the Braves methodically erase it in the final period. A late surge, capped by a decisive dunk from Quion Williams in the closing seconds, finally sealed the win for the home team before a crowd of 2,173.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff (10-13, 6-4 SWAC) came out scorching, connecting on 7 of its first 10 shots, including three 3-pointers from Mirhosseini in the opening minutes. The Golden Lions shot a sizzling 63.3% from the field in the first half, racking up 49 points by the break. Their offensive efficiency rating of 126.5 for the game underscored an attack that consistently generated high-quality shots, assisted by only five turnovers in the opening 20 minutes.
Alcorn State (4-18, 3-7), meanwhile, struggled to find its footing early. Despite shooting a respectable 50% in the first half, the Braves were undone by 10 turnovers and a significant rebounding deficit, particularly on the offensive glass where UAPB held a 9-4 advantage. The Golden Lions’ 49-34 halftime lead seemed poised to grow into a rout.
The second half, however, told a different story. The Braves tightened their defense, applying pressure that forced 10 Arkansas-Pine Bluff turnovers after halftime. Alcorn State’s offense, led by Davian Williams’ 18 points and a balanced supporting cast, began to chip away. The Braves used an 11-2 run midway through the half, fueled by steals and transition opportunities, to claw back into contention.
A critical sequence began with just over eight minutes remaining. Trailing 71-63, Alcorn State unleashed an 11-0 run. Nick Woodard and Davian Williams hit consecutive 3-pointers, and Tycen McDaniels finished a layup to give the Braves their first lead since the opening minute at 74-71 with 6:38 to play. The comeback was a product of defensive intensity, as Alcorn State tallied 11 steals for the game, six coming in the second half.
The game then descended into a tense, back-and-forth struggle over the final six minutes. Arkansas-Pine Bluff reclaimed a slim lead behind the interior work of Jaquan Scott, who finished with 13 points and three blocks, and the timely scoring of Quion Williams, who added 25 points. With the Golden Lions clinging to an 80-77 lead in the final 30 seconds, Alcorn State had two possessions to tie but committed turnovers on both. Mirhosseini, who also dished out six assists, then found Quion Williams for a breakaway dunk with two seconds left to provide the final margin.
While Alcorn State ultimately fell short, their second-half resilience was notable. They shot 53.6% from the field after halftime and an impressive 52.6% from 3-point range for the game. McDaniels added 12 points for the Braves, while Bryson Calamese and Shane Lancaster each chipped in 11.
For Arkansas-Pine Bluff, the victory was anchored by its efficient offense and ability to capitalize at the free-throw line, where it made 19 of 24 attempts. The Golden Lions also won the battle in the paint, 30-32, and on the fast break, 9-2, with several of those transition baskets coming in the first half to build their large lead.
The most important part of the game was Alcorn State’s dramatic 11-0 second-half run to take the lead, completely shifting momentum and setting up a nail-biting finish. Arkansas-Pine Bluff’s response, however, particularly its composure in the final three minutes and its clutch plays from Mirhosseini, Quion Williams, and Scott, proved decisive in snapping a two-game skid for the Golden Lions and handing the Braves a tough loss in a game they nearly stole on the road.
Both teams return to conference play Monday. Arkansas-Pine Bluff will host Jackson State, while Alcorn State travels to face Mississippi Valley State.
