Omaha at Denver
Preview: Omaha Mavericks at Denver Pioneers
DENVER (Interstat) — Two teams jockeying for position in the middle of the Summit League standings will meet Saturday when the Denver Pioneers host the Omaha Mavericks at Magness Arena.
Both teams enter the contest with nearly identical records and recent momentum. Omaha (11-12 overall) has won three of its last four, including an 80-71 victory over South Dakota State on Wednesday. Denver (10-13) snapped a three-game skid with a 69-61 road win at Missouri-Kansas City that same night.
The matchup features two of the conference’s top offensive talents. Denver will rely on the hot hand of guard Carson Johnson, who is averaging 22.4 points over his last five games. Johnson erupted for 32 points in a loss to North Dakota on Jan. 24 and scored 33 in a win over Oral Roberts on Jan. 14. His scoring prowess will be central to the Pioneers’ attack.
Omaha counters with guard Grant Stubblefield, a key facilitator in the Mavericks’ recent surge. Stubblefield is coming off a 13-point, 5-assist performance in the win over South Dakota State and has provided steady backcourt leadership. He will be tasked with managing the game against Denver’s pressure.
In Wednesday’s wins, both teams showcased balanced scoring. For Omaha, Paul Djobet added 16 points and Tony Osburn had 15 alongside Stubblefield’s effort. Denver saw strong support for Johnson from Zane Nelson (17 points) and Logan Kinsey (14 points).
The game is the first of a regular-season home-and-home series between the teams, who will meet again in Omaha on Feb. 14. With the Summit League tournament seeding at stake, Saturday’s contest offers a critical opportunity for either squad to establish a winning record in conference play.
Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. MST at Magness Arena.
