Omaha Edges Denver in Summit League Thriller

DENVER (Interstat) — In a game defined by a dramatic second-half reversal, the Omaha Mavericks erased a 14-point deficit to edge the Denver Pioneers 84-82 in a Summit League men’s basketball thriller on Saturday afternoon at Magness Arena.

The contest pivoted entirely on Omaha’s explosive offensive performance after halftime. After managing just 27 points on 30.3% shooting in a sluggish first half and trailing 35-27, the Mavericks erupted for 57 points in the second period. They shot 57.1% from the field after the break, methodically dismantling Denver’s lead before surviving a frantic final sequence.

The most critical stretch of the game came in the final three minutes. With Omaha clinging to a 79-77 lead, Denver’s Jeremiah Burke connected on a 3-pointer from the wing with 38 seconds remaining, giving the Pioneers an 82-81 advantage—their first lead since the 10:30 mark of the second half. On the ensuing possession, Omaha’s Paul Djobet was fouled on a drive to the basket with 25 seconds left. The junior from Lille, France, calmly sank both free throws to put the Mavericks back in front 83-82.

Denver had two chances to reclaim the lead in the closing seconds. After a timeout, the Pioneers worked the ball to Burke for another three-point attempt from nearly the same spot, but his shot missed with seven seconds on the clock. Omaha’s Brock Scholl secured the defensive rebound and was immediately fouled. Scholl made the first free throw to extend the lead to 84-82 but missed the second. Denver’s Zane Nelson grabbed the rebound and pushed the ball upcourt, but his desperation heave from just inside half-court as time expired fell short, sealing the Omaha victory.

Djobet was the catalyst for the Mavericks, scoring a game-high 27 points and grabbing 11 rebounds for a double-double. His performance included a crucial jump shot and a trio of free throws in the final two minutes. He was supported by backcourt mates Grant Stubblefield, who scored 17 points, and Ja’Sean Glover, who added 19 points off the bench, including 14 in the second half.

Denver was led by a balanced attack, with four players scoring between 18 and 19 points. Zane Nelson finished with 19 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Jeremiah Burke and Logan Kinsey each scored 18 points, while Carson Johnson added 19 points and four assists. The Pioneers shot well from beyond the arc, making 12 of 30 attempts, but were ultimately undone by Omaha’s 10-5 advantage in offensive rebounds and a 17-10 edge in made free throws.

The first half was a struggle for both offenses, but Denver found a rhythm late. A 13-2 run, capped by back-to-back 3-pointers from Burke and a layup by Nelson, gave the Pioneers a 35-25 lead with under a minute to play before taking the eight-point advantage into halftime.

Omaha’s comeback began immediately in the second half, sparked by aggressive drives from Stubblefield and the instant offense of Glover. A 12-2 Mavericks run tied the game at 44-44, setting the stage for a back-and-forth battle that featured nine lead changes and six ties in the final 15 minutes.

With the win, Omaha improves to 12-12 overall and evens its Summit League record. Denver falls to 10-14. The teams are scheduled to meet again in a rematch in Omaha on Feb. 14.

According to Interstat’s ELO system, Omaha had a 63.9% probability to win, though Denver closed as a 2.5-point favorite in the betting markets. The combined score of 166 points went under the pregame over/under line of 158.5. Attendance was announced at 1,037.

The victory marks Omaha’s third in its last four games, providing momentum as it heads into a road trip next week at North Dakota and North Dakota State. Denver will look to regroup on its own road swing at those same two opponents.
