Troy Holds Off Georgia Southern in Sun Belt Road Contest

STATESBORO, Ga. (Interstat) — In a game defined by runs and relentless interior pressure, the Troy men’s basketball team held off a late Georgia Southern rally to secure an 83-78 Sun Belt Conference victory on Saturday afternoon at Hanner Fieldhouse.

The Trojans, who led for over 38 minutes, saw a 13-point second-half advantage nearly evaporate in the final minutes before closing the game on a decisive 7-2 run from the free-throw line to seal the win. The victory improved Troy to 15-6 overall, while Georgia Southern fell to 13-9.

The most critical sequence of the contest unfolded in the game’s final 90 seconds. After Georgia Southern’s Nakavieon White sank a 3-pointer to cut Troy’s lead to 74-71 with 2:22 remaining, the Eagles had momentum and multiple opportunities to draw closer or tie. Troy’s offense, however, found answers at the rim. Victor Valdes converted a tip-in on a missed layup, and after a Georgia Southern turnover, Thomas Dowd powered through contact for a putback layup while being fouled. He completed the three-point play at the line, pushing the lead back to 79-74 with 1:25 left.

Georgia Southern’s Tavarus Webb hit two free throws to make it a three-point game again, but Troy expertly managed the clock. Valdes drove for another layup with 49 seconds left, forcing an Eagles timeout. On the ensuing possession, Troy’s defense forced a difficult 3-point attempt from Dwayne Williams that missed. Dowd secured the defensive rebound and was immediately fouled, calmly sinking both free throws to extend the lead to 83-76 with 18 seconds left, effectively ending the contest.

The game’s outcome was largely forged in the paint and on the glass, where Troy established a commanding physical presence. The Trojans outscored Georgia Southern 38-28 inside and, more importantly, dominated the offensive boards with a 12-6 advantage. This led to 16 second-chance points and allowed Troy to maintain offensive efficiency despite committing 13 turnovers. Troy’s work on the glass was led by Dowd, who grabbed 12 rebounds.

Dowd, a 6-foot-8 forward from Dothan, Alabama, was the game’s top performer, recording a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds while adding two assists and a block in 36 minutes. His interior play and clutch free throws down the stretch were pivotal. He was complemented by a stellar scoring afternoon from Victor Valdes, who led all scorers with 22 points on 8-of-15 shooting. Valdes, a 6-7 forward from Monterrey, Mexico, also contributed three assists.

Georgia Southern was led by a balanced offensive effort. Tavarus Webb, a 6-4 guard from Hartwell, Georgia, scored 17 points. Alden Applewhite, a 6-7 forward from Memphis, Tennessee, added 19 points and four rebounds. Tyren Moore contributed 14 points and four assists, while Nakavieon White finished with 11 points, five rebounds and three assists.

The game began at a frenetic pace, with Troy jumping out to an early 8-0 lead behind two quick 3-pointers from Cobi Campbell. Georgia Southern responded with a 9-2 run of its own, and the first half settled into a back-and-forth affair featuring eight lead changes. Troy took a narrow 41-38 lead into halftime after a tightly contested opening period where neither team led by more than six points.

Troy opened the second half with purpose, using a 12-4 spurt to build its first double-digit lead at 53-42. The Trojans maintained control for much of the half, with their advantage hovering between 8 and 13 points until Georgia Southern mounted its final push. The Eagles’ defense generated eight steals, leading to 16 points off turnovers, which kept them within striking distance and set the stage for the tense finish.

Statistically, the teams were remarkably even in many categories. Both shot nearly 50% from the field—Troy at 49.1% (28 of 57) and Georgia Southern at 48.2% (27 of 56). From 3-point range, Georgia Southern made 11 to Troy’s nine. The critical differential came at the free-throw line, where Troy attempted seven more free throws and made five more, finishing 18 of 24 compared to Georgia Southern’s 13 of 17.

The win extends Troy’s winning streak to four games as they continue a strong run in Sun Belt play. Georgia Southern, coming off a loss to Arkansas State on Thursday, has now dropped two consecutive conference games. Troy will host James Madison on Thursday, while Georgia Southern travels to face Louisiana-Monroe.
