Arkansas State at Georgia State

ATLANTA (Interstat) — A surging Arkansas State team visits a struggling but recently improved Georgia State squad in a Sun Belt Conference men’s basketball matchup Saturday at GSU Sports Arena.

The Arkansas State Red Wolves (13-7, 4-3 Sun Belt) enter with momentum after an 85-68 road win at Georgia Southern on Thursday. The Georgia State Panthers (8-12, 4-3) have won three of their last four, including a 69-62 home victory over Southern Mississippi on Thursday, to pull even with the Red Wolves in the conference standings.

Arkansas State’s success has been fueled by balanced scoring and efficient play. In the win over Georgia Southern, Joey Chammaa posted 15 points and six assists in 28 minutes, while Jaxon Ellingsworth added 13 points and Jalen Hampton had 10. Chammaa, a key player to watch, is averaging 9.9 points per game but has been inconsistent in conference play, scoring 15 points Thursday after being held to nine total in his previous two outings.

Georgia State relies heavily on the hot hand of guard Jelani Hamilton, who is averaging 19.3 points per game. He scored 23 points in the win over Southern Miss and has topped 20 points in four of his last six contests, including a 23-point, eight-assist performance in a win at Louisiana-Monroe on Jan. 17.

The Red Wolves have been strong on the road in conference play, with wins at Georgia Southern and Texas State, but have also suffered lopsided losses at Troy and South Alabama. The Panthers have found their footing at home after a tough start to the season, winning three straight at GSU Sports Arena.

Historically, the teams have split their last 10 meetings. Arkansas State’s offensive depth, with six players averaging at least 8.5 points per game, will challenge a Georgia State defense that has allowed just 62.3 points per game during its recent home stand.

Tipoff is set for Saturday afternoon in Atlanta. Arkansas State visits Old Dominion next on Jan. 28, while Georgia State travels to face Louisiana-Lafayette on Jan. 29.
