Sun Devils Outpace Bearcats Behind Odum’s 33 Points

TEMPE, Ariz. (Interstat) — Maurice Odum scored 33 points and Arizona State used a decisive second-half surge fueled by perimeter shooting to pull away from Cincinnati 82-68 in a Big 12 men’s basketball game Saturday night at Wells Fargo Arena.

The Sun Devils (11-9) snapped a three-game losing streak by connecting on 13 of 28 attempts from 3-point range, a stark contrast to the Bearcats’ 4-of-17 shooting from deep. The victory was a welcome turnaround for Arizona State, which had lost its previous three games by an average of 18 points.

Cincinnati (10-10), coming off a 26-point road loss to Arizona, kept pace in the first half and trailed just 37-33 at the break behind 15 points from 7-foot-2 center Moustapha Thiam. The Bearcats’ 6-11 forward Baba Miller was also effective early, finishing with 23 points.

The game’s complexion changed dramatically after halftime. Leading 45-42 with 15:57 remaining, Arizona State unleashed a 14-2 run over the next four minutes to seize control. The spurt was emblematic of the night, featuring two 3-pointers from Odum and another from Santiago Trouet, while Cincinnati missed four consecutive shots and committed two turnovers.

Odum, a 6-foot-2 guard from the Bronx, New York, was the catalyst throughout, adding eight assists to his game-high point total. He scored 15 points in the second half, including a trio of 3-pointers during the pivotal run that stretched the Sun Devils’ lead to 59-44. His backcourt mate, Anthony Johnson, added 11 points, all in the second half, to help secure the win.

Cincinnati struggled to generate consistent offense outside of its interior duo. Thiam finished with 15 points and two blocks, while Miller added four assists to his 23 points. But the Bearcats’ backcourt combined to shoot just 3 of 14 from beyond the arc, and the team committed 14 turnovers leading to 15 Arizona State points.

Arizona State’s offensive efficiency proved superior. The Sun Devils scored 82 points on 72 possessions for an offensive rating of 113.9, while Cincinnati managed only 68 points on 71 possessions, a rating of 95.6. The Sun Devils also capitalized at the free-throw line, making 15 of 21 attempts compared to Cincinnati’s 10 of 15.

Defensively, Arizona State protected the rim with four blocks from 7-foot-1 center Massamba Diop, who also contributed six points and nine rebounds. The Sun Devils’ ability to contest inside, coupled with Cincinnati’s cold outside shooting, allowed them to build and maintain a double-digit lead for the final 12 minutes.

The Bearcats made a brief push to cut the deficit to 64-56 with 7:11 left after a steal and layup by Sencire Harris, who finished with eight points. But Odum answered immediately with a 3-pointer on the next possession, and Cincinnati never threatened again. Odum sealed the game with another 3-pointer in the final minute for the final margin.

A crowd of 6,950 watched as Arizona State improved its home record and handed Cincinnati its second consecutive road loss. The Bearcats, who had won two of their last three entering the game, now face a quick turnaround with a home game against Baylor on Wednesday.

Arizona State, which had lost five of its last six, will look to build momentum with a road game at UCF on Tuesday. The Sun Devils’ shooting performance marked a season-high in made 3-pointers for a conference game, providing a necessary offensive spark after recent struggles.

The game was a matchup of teams projected closely by analytics, with Cincinnati holding a slight pregame probability edge of 53.7% to win according to Interstat’s ELO system. Arizona State’s shooting performance, led by Odum’s season-high scoring output in a conference game, ultimately defied those projections and provided a critical victory in the middle of the Big 12 schedule.
