Maryland at Michigan State
Preview: Struggling Maryland Faces Michigan State in Big Ten Clash
EAST LANSING, Mich. (Interstat) — A stark contrast in trajectories will be on display Saturday when the reeling Maryland Terrapins visit the fourth-ranked Michigan State Spartans in a Big Ten Conference men’s basketball matchup.
The game tips off at 12 p.m. EST at the Breslin Center.
Michigan State (17-2, 7-1 Big Ten) enters as one of the nation’s hottest teams, having won seven straight games since a narrow two-point road loss at Nebraska on Jan. 2. The Spartans are anchored by a dominant defense, allowing just 58.3 points per game during their winning streak. Their most recent victory was a 68-52 rout at Oregon on Tuesday.
Senior forward Carson Cooper has been a force for the Spartans. He is averaging 14.3 points over his last three games, including a 19-point, 4-block performance against the Ducks. His interior presence will be a primary challenge for Maryland.
The Terrapins (7-11, 1-6) are mired in a difficult season, having lost nine of their last 11 games. They are coming off an 89-70 loss at Illinois on Wednesday. Maryland’s lone conference win came against Penn State on Jan. 18, a game in which they scored 96 points. However, they have failed to reach 72 points in any of their other six Big Ten contests.
Freshman guard Andre Mills provides a spark for Maryland, coming off a team-high 16 points in just 16 minutes against Illinois. His scoring off the bench will be crucial against Michigan State’s stout defense.
Historically, the Spartans have controlled the series, winning eight of the last ten meetings. The teams last met in the 2025 Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals, a game Michigan State won 65-60.
For Maryland, the schedule offers little respite. After facing the Spartans, they host Purdue on Feb. 1. Michigan State, firmly in the conference title race, hits the road to face Rutgers on Jan. 27 before a pivotal rematch with in-state rival Michigan on Jan. 30.
