Spartans Dominate Terrapins in Lopsided Big Ten Matchup

EAST LANSING, Mich. (Interstat) — In a display of overwhelming efficiency and defensive dominance, Michigan State dismantled Maryland 91-48 in a Big Ten Conference men’s basketball game Saturday at Breslin Center.

The Spartans, improving to 18-2 overall and 6-1 in the conference, left no doubt from the opening tip, holding the Terrapins to a season-low in points and field goal percentage. Maryland, which fell to 7-12 and 2-5, managed to connect on just 18 of its 54 shot attempts, a frigid 33.3 percent, and went 6 for 26 from three-point range.

The most important part of the game was Michigan State’s immediate and sustained defensive pressure, which completely stifled Maryland’s offense and fueled a devastating transition attack. The Spartans scored 31 fastbreak points and converted 17 points off Maryland’s eight turnovers, while the Terrapins failed to record a single fastbreak point and managed only four points off Michigan State’s seven giveaways. This relentless pace, initiated by defensive stops, allowed Michigan State to build a double-digit lead early in the first half and never look back.

Jeremy Fears, the Spartans’ standout guard, orchestrated the blowout with a masterful performance, scoring 17 points and dishing out 17 assists. His facilitation was the engine of an offense that shot 60.7 percent from the floor and posted an offensive rating of 142.1 points per 100 possessions. Fears consistently found teammates in stride, leading to easy baskets that demoralized the Terrapins.

Carson Cooper provided a powerful inside presence for Michigan State, scoring 14 points and grabbing eight rebounds. Jaxon Kohler added 11 points and eight rebounds, while Coen Carr chipped in 14 points. The Spartans dominated the interior, outscoring Maryland 38-16 in the paint.

For the Terrapins, who have now lost four of their last five games, Elijah Saunders led the way with 13 points. David Coit scored 11 points and Solomon Washington had eight points, six rebounds and four assists, but Maryland’s offensive struggles were systemic. The team recorded only four assists against eight turnovers and an offensive rating of just 79.7.

Michigan State seized control with a 15-2 run midway through the first half, turning a 9-6 lead into a 24-8 advantage. The Spartans led 46-26 at halftime and opened the second half with a 10-2 spurt to extinguish any lingering hope for the visitors. The lead ballooned to as many as 45 points in the final minutes as Michigan State emptied its bench.

The victory extends Michigan State’s home winning streak to 12 games. The Spartans next travel to face Rutgers on Tuesday. Maryland, which has lost its last three games by an average of 27 points, returns home to host Purdue on Feb. 1.
