Mellouk Leads Morehead State to Close Win Over Eastern Illinois
HALDEMAN, Ky. (Interstat) — In a game defined by defensive stands and offensive droughts, the Morehead State Eagles leaned on a dominant interior presence to fend off a persistent Eastern Illinois squad 73-68 in an Ohio Valley Conference men’s basketball clash Saturday afternoon at E.T. Johnson Arena.
The contest, played before an intimate crowd of 1,013, was a tale of starkly contrasting efficiencies. Morehead State’s victory was anchored not by a high-volume scoring outburst, but by a remarkably efficient shooting performance and a formidable rim-protecting effort led by forward Anouar Mellouk. The Eagles converted 24 of 46 field goal attempts, a 52.2% clip, while the visiting Panthers labored to a 36.2% afternoon, making just 21 of 58 shots.
The most important stretch of the game arrived late in the second half with the outcome still in doubt. Clinging to a narrow lead, Morehead State’s defense, which finished with 10 blocks, repeatedly turned away Eastern Illinois at the basket. With under two minutes to play and the Eagles leading 69-67, Eastern Illinois guard Zion Fruster attacked the lane only to have his layup swatted by Mellouk. After a Panthers timeout, Preston Turner’s putback attempt on the ensuing possession met the same fate, again rejected by the 6-foot-8 Mellouk. Those consecutive blocks preserved the slim advantage and ultimately denied Eastern Illinois a chance to tie or take the lead in the final minute.
Mellouk, a junior from Amsterdam, Netherlands, was the central figure in the Eagles’ win, posting a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds while matching a game-high with four blocks. His defensive impact extended beyond the stat sheet, altering numerous other attempts in the paint. He was complemented by guard Chase Dawson of Durham, North Carolina, who scored a team-high 18 points. George Marshall of Jackson, Mississippi, added 12 points and two blocks for Morehead State, which improved to 11-10 overall.
Eastern Illinois, which fell to 9-12, was led by the scoring of Preston Turner. The guard from Ellsinore, Missouri, poured in a game-high 18 points, including three shots from beyond the arc. Kooper Jacobi of Sellersburg, Indiana, contributed 13 points for the Panthers, who capitalized on 17 Morehead State turnovers to score 14 points, but could not overcome their own shooting struggles.
The game was a back-and-forth affair for much of the afternoon, with the teams entering halftime tied at 35. The second half followed a similar pattern of small runs, but Morehead State’s superior shot-making and interior defense created just enough separation. The Eagles scored 26 points in the paint and were efficient from the free-throw line, making 21 of 24 attempts. Eastern Illinois kept pace from the charity stripe, hitting 20 of 24, but their 15 offensive rebounds yielded only limited second-chance success against Morehead State’s packed-in defense.
A key subplot was the battle of ball security versus disruption. Eastern Illinois, despite its shooting woes, forced 17 turnovers and recorded eight steals, with Meechie White of Louisville, Kentucky, notching three. However, the Panthers’ own 10 turnovers and inability to convert in half-court sets against the Eagles’ length proved decisive. Morehead State’s offense, while committing more turnovers, operated with a clear efficiency edge, posting an offensive rating of 115.1 points per 100 possessions compared to Eastern Illinois’s 105.6.
The win moves Morehead State to a winning record in conference play and provides momentum as they prepare to host SIU Edwardsville next Thursday. Eastern Illinois, meanwhile, will look to regroup at home against Tennessee-Martin on the same night. The teams are scheduled for a rematch in Charleston, Illinois, on Feb. 19.
